Every night before I go to bed, I pray to the magical, mystical unicorns of the universe to bring Maggie Mudd to LA. I’ve had my fair share of scrumptious deliumptious vegan ice cream, but I have to say Maggie Mudd takes the (ice cream) cake. If you live in San Francisco and you like sweet, decadent, mind-blowingly awesome ice cream (and hey, who doesn’t?), you need to get your booties to Maggie Mudd asap.

They have a wonderful selection of cones, sundaes, shakes and cakes that are insanely delish and vegan (they have non-vegan ice cream, too, so make sure to order off their vegan menu). Maggie Mudd is by no means a boring, ho-hum vanilla ice creamery. You can expect to devour vegan scoops like Banana Rum Brownie, Peanut Butter Palooka, and Coconut Pecan Praline, just to name a few. I was so overwhelmed by all the vegan options (there we 16 dairy-free flavors to choose from that day) that I spent at least 15 mins. finalizing my order.

I decided to go with the Maggie Muddy Fudgy, which is a rich, hot brownie with a (2) scoops of ice cream (I chose Tramack and Toasted Coconut), whipped cream, nuts, sprinkles, and choice of sauce (I chose their marshmallow sauce – my favorite part of the sundae). It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Maggie Mudd, please get yo’ ass to LA! xo

There have been quite a few vegan bake sale fundraisers in L.A. lately (which I’m all about), with proceeds going toward helping animals. Yay! I’ve had my fair share of vegan cupcakes but some of the most moist, floofiest, scrumptious-deliumptious cupcakes I’ve ever tried at these events were made by 13-year-old cupcake extraordinaire, Clara. She runs her own cupcake business in L.A. called Clara’s Cakes. I had to learn more about this sweet toothed sweetheart. Here’s what she had to say…

Are these cupcakes your own recipes? Or do you use any special cookbooks?

Most of these cupcakes are my ideas. Sometimes for the recipes, I’ll just take a basic cupcake flavor from a vegan cookbook (I adore Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World) or online and modify it to make it have the perfect texture and taste that I miss from non-vegan cupcakes/desserts.

What inspired you to make vegan cupcakes?

What inspired me to make vegan cupcakes and desserts in general was actually just being vegan! I wanted to just experiment and practice baking vegan until the end result tasted like a dessert that would normally have dairy and eggs in it, but better! I realized becoming vegan, I would have to teach myself how to bake/cook from scratch, rather than just popping this and that in the microwave and oven.

How long have you been vegan/vegetarian?

I have been vegetarian since I was 5 years old, so 8 years. I’ve been vegan for about 1 year! My mom has really influenced me, but she hasn’t forced anything on me which is the best way to help people make the transition. I became vegan for a couple reasons that just kind of collided together. I had previously thought that being vegetarian was cruelty-free, but I realized I was completely wrong. I also thought it was really gross to consume breast milk from cows that was meant for their babies, who get separated within a couple of hours and used for veal. Becoming vegan was probably the best decision of my life!

What’s your advice for young people who are interested in becoming vegan?

Take it slowly. Being vegan is a hard thing to get used to—it shouldn’t be overwhelming, but refreshing. If you accidentally eat something with some dairy derived ingredient, no big deal. You’ll just learn from that mistake not to have that certain food/ingredient. Don’t be hard on yourself. Also, get your parents involved, even just one parent. Research what you’re doing and explain it thoroughly to your parents. If they don’t get it, tell them the horrid facts you’ve learned about dairy and factory farming. Explain to them it’s not going to cost more money, probably about the same, and find more affordable places to shop that provide plenty of vegan options.

What is your all time favorite kind of cupcake?

That’s a really hard question! I love my Neapolitan cupcake, but the basic chocolate and vanilla cupcakes are great since you can make them into whatever flavor you can imagine.

Want to place an order for some of Clara’s yummy cupcakes? Send her an e-mail! Also, make sure to become a fan of Clara’s Cakes’ Facebook Page and check out her blog Clara in Veganland!

They make natural, preservative-free ice cream from scratch–while you watch! They have 16 different ice cream flavors and 19 toppings to choose from and you of course get to choose which kind of milk you want (SOY!). It’s literally just milk (soy), fruit and toppings. They whip up your ice cream in about a minute–It’s trippy to see it go from liquid to solid (after being mixed, spread and slapped around) so quickly. Here are 2 of my faves…

If you live in L.A. and you haven’t been to Madeleine Bistro yet, you are missing out on one of the finest vegan dining experiences this city has to offer. This is a fancy, upscale, family-owned restaurant that serves the BEST 100% vegan French cuisine. Dave and Molly, the owners, are some of the sweetest people I’ve ever met in my life and their culinary works of art are insanely, sinfully satiating.

I highly recommend you go there for their affordable brunch tomorrow (10am – 3pm) and order the Phillet No Fish and Beet Tartare… I guarantee this will be one of the tastiest meals of your life! Their Phillet No Fish has a crispy/flakey phillet, which comes with Dave’s amazing homemade cheese and vegan tartar sauce (I like to add their cheesy tofu scramble on the side for $4). The Beet Tartare, their signature dish, is out of this world YUMZ. There aren’t words to describe how awesome it it – you’ll just have to try it!

I love how vegan pizza is taking over the world. Even just a few years ago, discovering vegan pizza options in restaurants was like finding the holy grail. Thankfully, nowadays, vegan pizza is all up in our grills (literally) – so much sometimes, that I actually get pizza-ed out. That’s crazy right? I feel extremely lucky and grateful to be a vegan who gets to indulge in all the sinful tasting, decadent, ass-growing foods like the rest of the world. Don’t worry, I balance out my heffa food with some hearty salads from time to time. *Note* Z Pizza uses organic ingredients and they have whole wheat and gluten free crusts, too… if that makes you feel any better.

Anywho, Z Pizza is a national pizza chain (actually, international – they have locations in Mexico and the Middle East!) that carries Daiya cheese and has a wonderful selection of vegan pies. They have a Berkeley vegan pizza with Daiya and Gardein veggie crumbles that is to die for. I personally am nuts over their Tuscan pizza with garlic sauce; Diaya cheese (sub for mozz); Cremini, Shittaki, and Button mushrooms; caramelized onions; truffle oil and thyme. I could make love to this pizza it’s so good. *Note* Keep in mind, any pizza can be veganized!

(making this city a vegan paradise), I have to say that M Café is definitely one of my all time favorites (it’s in my top 5). M Café serves natural and organic macrobiotic food which is 90% vegan (steer clear of their fish). They have the most delish breakfast items, salads, sandwiches, sushi (veggie rolls), and desserts! All of their desserts are 100% vegan so make it a goal to try them all!

They have some of the tastiest vegan desserts I have ever had in my life! Seriously, I fantasize about their peanut butter bomb brownie like, every day. Their desserts are affordable, too! Vegan cake slices (Death by Chocolate, Peanut Butter Bomb, Hazelnut Delight and Carrot Cake) are $4.75 each and their vegan brownies (Plain Double Chocolate, Peanut Butter Crumb, Peanut Butter Bomb and Peppermint) are $2.75 each.

I’ll let these photos speak for themselves…

Little Atlas also has amazing vegan soups, salads, shakes and sandwiches… but personally, I’m all about the SUGAR!

My hubby and I went to NYC for my birthday and although it was raining for the majority of our stay, it was full of delishiousness and fun times. While romping about in NYC (sans the hubs), my sis-in-law took me to a wonderful and affordable eatery called Dojo. It’s right next to NYU and this place is always hoppin’. Although this restaurant isn’t entirely vegan, they have many healthy vegan options to choose from that won’t break the bank and are sure to make your tum-tum happy.

We started off our meal with their Hummus appetizer ($3.95) which was chick peas blended with olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and spices with toasted whole wheat pita bread. Damn, this was some tasty-ass hummus. What really made this simple appetizer the bomb was the freshly toasted, hot pita bread. (sorry, no photo, I got carried away and ate the damn thing)

For my entree, I decided to get the Hijiki Tofu Dinner ($4.95) which is a fried hijiki and tofu loaf-like patty (latty? poaf? loafatty?) served with brown rice and Japanese BBQ sauce and a side salad with AMAZING carrot ginger dressing. Seriously, the Japanese BBQ sauce and carrot ginger dressing were drink-worthy. Next time I go back, I’m ordering extra sauces on the side–they are to die for! The loaf-like patty was crispy on the outside and softer on the inside and it was packed with so much flavor. I could eat this dish for every meal of every day. I still can’t believe this entire dish was under $5–it was filling too!

Okay, ready for the icing on the cake? On our last day in NYC, my hubby and I decided to have one last meal at Dojo before heading to the airport. While while enjoying our scrumptious meal, we had a celebrity sighting! We saw ❤ David Duchovny ❤! Not only did we see him, but he made eye contact with me twice! For those of you who don’t know me personally, I’ve had a crush on David Duchovny since I was 15! This was a big deal. I tried to get my hubby to take a discreet photo with his iphone but the pics came out mega blurry… you know I’d be Duchovnying up this post like crazy if I had me some pics!

So, give Dojo a try, and if you see David Duchovny while munching on Hijiki yums, take his photo and e-mail it to me!
