Brunching It Up in NYC

There’s absolutely no doubt that NYC is one of the most vegan-friendly cities in the US. That’s why when my boo and I visit the Big Apple, we make sure to squeeze in as much vegan grub at as many restaurants as possible.

Everyone and their granny insists that Counter has the best vegan brunch in NYC. Although we had been to Counter before, we had never gone for brunch… So for this trip, we made a point to wake up early enough to brunch it up. It was pretty damn awesome (not my absolute fave, but it was up there).

Highlights:

Their vegan baked goods (first pic below) came with vegan Nutella. ‘Nuf said. Sold. Happy tum-tum.

The Kale Ceasar Salad was off the hook. It was super hearty and flavorful and caperlicious. The chunks of tempeh were icing on the cake (mismatached food expression – I don’t care).

The Biscuits and Gravy and Tofu Scram were OK (required a bit of salt and hot sauce to kick ‘em up a notch). I wasn’t überly horny about them, but I ate everything up like a good girl.

With the kazillion bunzillion vegan restaurants in L.A. (making this city a vegan paradise), I have to say that M Café is definitely one of my all time favorites (it’s in my top 5). M Café serves natural and organic macrobiotic food which is 90% vegan (steer clear of their fish). They have the most delish breakfast items, salads, sandwiches, sushi (veggie rolls), and desserts! All of their desserts are 100% vegan so make it a goal to try them all!

The Big Macro, $9.75

I know I’ve blogged about Curly’s in NYC before, but I got try something different from the last time I was in the city… so I had to share. Curly’s serves vegan breakfast dishes during all hours of operation. This is a big deal because I love breakfast for dinner… like, love it! Pictured below is Curly’s weekend vegan Grand Slam Breakfast/Brunch (tofu scramble w/vegan cheese, pancakes w/maple syrup and berries, fake ham and their signature curly fries) – all for under $10. Dude, curly fries for breakfast. Mr. Curly and I obviously have similar priorities…

Restaurant Review: Mani’s Bakery in Los Angeles

FYI:

Complete Awesomeness: Tofu Scramble Hash ($13) with organic tofu, scrambled with asparagus, mushrooms, spinach, miso, nutritional yeast and veggie tempeh bacon (we added vegan cheddar cheese). Sides we chose: Olive bread toast and breakfast potatoes.

This is the BEST breakfast in town and it’s served all day. This reminds me of NYC’s amazing breakfast spots.

Should be Awesome but Not: Red Velvet Cupcake ($4)

I’m super easy to please in the sugar department. If it’s sweet, I usually love it no matter what. Mani’s is the exception; their desserts need some serious love. This cupcake was sooooooooooo dry and the icing was hard and stale and when it finally broke down in mouth, it tasted like pure, salty-ish cream cheese (but clumpier). I’ve had very bad luck with desserts at Mani’s. They all look beautiful but I’ve yet to try one that’s actually good. I still order a different dessert every time I go, hoping there’s at least one gem in their lovely bakery display case.
