Know Your Ingredients!

know your ingredients

Know Your Ingredients is not only an amazeballs vegan beauty line, but it’s advice that you should take to heart if you haven’t already. KYI makes “minimally processed,” “whole food” skincare products with pure and nutrient-rich ingredients like shea butter, argan oil, and sweet almond oil. I got to sample three of their delicious concoctions, and as you can imagine (brace yourself for emoticorniness), I became smitten! :)  ♥ :)  ♥ :)  ♥

The Goods:

Whipped Shea Butter Mask (Chamomile Lavender), $20: OK, y’all know I’m obsessed with looking current-age-minus-15 until forevs, right? Well, this delicate and beautifully scented shea buttery goodness helps fight wrinks, minimizes redness, and helps fade scars. I’ve been having regular nightly shea slather seshes for awhile now, and I always wake up to suuuuper soft (like baby booty soft, f’reals!) skin in the morning. I also sometimes use this moisturizer all over my body after bathing, and I’ve even used it on my hair as leave-in conditioner/frizz control. It’s versatile, it has a calming scent, and it’s gonna help me retain my foin skank status until I’m crusty and old.

Sweet Almond Softening Oil (Litsea Cubeba), $20: This emollient softening oil ain’t no joke! It’s so effective that the second I apply it, my scaly-ass dragon skin begins to feel supple and lady-like. Seriously, I can’t stop touching myself when my skin is this soft!! (G-rated, betches) I highly recommend the litsea cubeba scent… it’s SO fun to say (go on, try it), and it smells pretty and uplifting!

Argan Oil Serum with Vitamin C (Orange Grapefruit), $45: Argan oil has gotten so much hype lately as a miracle oil… and guess what? It is! It absorbs quickly, it’s a kick-ass moisturizer, and it works wonders on skin and hair (just ask my hot pink, used-to-be crustactious, frizzy, straw-y hair—my follicles are bowing down to the mighty argan). Add in  some sweet citrusy orange grapefruit oil into the mix… so BOMB. I use this kind of sparingly ’cause I want it to last forever, and it’s so easy because a little goes a loooong way.

I know you’re prolly like, “How is that you’re so in love with all of these products? How can you love everything?” Well, ladies and germs, I only review awesome vegan shit… and this shit is AWESOME! Get to know KYI and treat yo’self to some fab, anti-aging, wholesome skincare.

Have you tried KYI? Do you luuuurve everything as much as I do? What’s your favorite argan oil product?

Nayked Botanicals Vegan Beauty Line

Get Nayked! That is the plea of Nayked Botanicals and trust me, you’ll want to once you try these 100% vegan products! Created by a veteran aesthetician, the products are different than your average vegan skin care line because they’re designed to work in a dermatologist’s office and thus, have a little more oomph.

I met with Vicky, the owner of Nayked, at one of the dermatologist’s offices in Boca Raton, Florida where her products are sold. Vicky has radiant skin and hair—it’s definitely encouraging to use her products! Vicky loaded me up with different products to try—all of them vegan and green—no chemicals and they’re full of easy-to-read ingredients like aloe, primrose oil, grape fruit extract, etc. I half expected the products to be like many vegan products I used—excellent ingredients and packaging but light on results—but I was thrilled to be wrong!

My first and favorite product is the Nayked Botanical Cleanse. It’s a gentle foaming cleanser that smells better than any product I have ever used! It lathers and feels silky to the skin. Best of all, it removes mascara! I gently used the solution on my eye lids and the waterproof mascara I swear by came right off!

Next I tried the Revive toner. It’s different from other toners because it’s a spray that foams on your skin. It lifts the dirt off your face and then you wipe it off with a towel.  The main ingredient is grapefruit extract which is great for combatting acne.

I followed this with the Eye Lift Cream. It actually tingled the area around my eyes.  It is a very light cream which I liked, and a little bit goes a long way which is always nice. I combined this with my own moisturizer, and I felt a lightness to my skin I simply hadn’t felt in awhile.  This was my first full facial using vegan products, and it didn’t leave any film that many products tend to leave on my face. It’s been two months, and I am still on the same cleanser, toner, and eye lift cream—a little goes a long way with these products!

I would say the only miss was the suntan lotion. My pores clog easily, and this cream didn’t work for my skin. I had some minor breakouts and stopped using it. However, members of my family got hold of it and absolutely loved using the sunscreen on their kids. It smells almost like coffee, yet it’s nice and relatively light. Again, for my own personal skin, it didn’t work, but for those with fairer skin, it would probably be perfect.

I can’t wait to now try Nayked Botanicals hair products. If my face feels this much lighter with vegan skin care, I can imagine what my hair is going to feel like!  Stay tuned for that review!

This Week’s Favorite Vegan Things!

a.dorn Own Night Cream fat_chance_weight_loss_book my botto Lilly Brush

  • a.dorn Landlocked Mermaid, $11: All a.dorn nail polishes are free of toulene, DBP, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, and camphor, and they are vegan and cruelty-free. Landlocked Mermaid is a GORGEOUS duochrome of blue, green, and purple sheer. It’s sparkly and magical!  I applied 3 coats for an intense mermaid-y look, and the color lasted for almost 3 full weeks (got lots of compliments, too)! **Use discount code: BLOGLOVE2 for $2 off any polish from their website including 3-packs—unlimited use until May 31, 2013!**
  • Own Refining Night Cream, $24.99: This vegan and cruelty-free night cream contains clinically proven CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) technology, a plant-based ingredient designed to enhance collagen levels, improve moisture retention, and boost metabolism for softer, smoother, and genuinely younger-looking skin. This moisturizer is also Retinol-free, so it won’t cause irritation, redness or flakiness, and it’s paraben-free and sulfate-free! I’ve been using this lightweight cream every night for the past 2 weeks, and it makes my skin feel so incredibly smooth (it smells pretty, too).
  • Fat Chance!, $25: I got this book because I wanted to get rid of my last bit of post-baby jigglies ASAP. This weight loss workbook is a 12-week program that helps record progress in a unique workbook format. Author Susan Maiava’s book focuses on this idea: Forget how “fat” (her word choice, not mine) people diet, focus on how slim people eat (like my pre-baby self). ;) Her book integrates the latest scientific knowledge and cognitive behavioral principles into an interactive program of daily personal reflection and lifestyle change for healthy and sustainable weight-loss. I like this book because it’s like writing in a journal, and it’s full of questions, exercises, and tid bits—all good stuff!
  • mybotto, $14.99 for a four-pack: Don’t you hate it when your bottle of fancy, expensive vegan shampoo/moisturizer/hair gel/etc. is almost empty except fot that last 15-20% that sticks to the bottom (and takes like 8 billion years to travel upward as you spin it, shake it, curse at it, and throw it across the room)? Me, too! With mybotto inverted bottle holders, you can flip bottles upside down, and let gravity do its thang. These handy little doodads come in different colors and are super affordable.
  • Lilly Brush, $12.95: O.M.G. If you’re as sick of sticky and wasteful lint rollers as I am (I’ve got 4 long-haired kittehs!), get ready to ditch those for a Lilly Brush! This bad boy (girl?) works on all natural fibers including cotton, bamboo, and hemp. It’s mega portable (I keep mine in my car), and it works wonders at removing pills, lint, and pet hair without damaging delicate fabrics. I use it on my couches, tees, pullovers, rugs, you name it (just quickly brush it up and down or side to side as you would a link roller). ‘Tis the shit! Look at their before and after pics (it really does work like magic—my jaw dropped the first time I used it). YAYAYAY!!! :D

Nature’s Gate Glow Lotion Review

Every spring I become a madwoman. My husband starts the eye rolls and my wallet begins to suffer. It is that time of the year where I hunt for a new, colorful item to add to my beauty stash. I am so tired of, well, looking tired by the end of a Midwestern winter. I become driven by thoughts of pink blush, sea foam colored eye shadow, and lilac fingernails. This year, I started searching for that little extra something to give me the ever-coveted “inner glow.” In shopping for some shampoo, I stumbled upon a gem at my local grocery store. Enter our hero of this story: Nature’s Gate Glow Lotion for Light Skin Tones. I was already familiar with the brand, but had never actually used their products. Glancing at the back of the bottle, I saw my favorite smiling bunny logo to confirm that the product was cruelty free and vegan. A quick glance at the ingredients showcased some skin-saving ingredients such as almond oil, rosehip oil, and glycerin.

Nature's Gate Glow Lotion

The product claims to give your skin a darker tone with continued use. You can either use the product daily to get a 365 look of sun, or you can use the product until you achieve the desired color. To be honest with all of you, I am completely lazy when it comes to moisturizing my skin with lotion. I’m usually more of an oil gal because I find that using oil on my skin takes far less time. Therefore, I tested the product only a few times in the first few weeks out of pure laziness. After only a few applications, I was pleasantly surprised to notice a subtle darkening on my legs and my arms. In fact, the effect was so perfectly subtle and unobtrusive that I questioned if it was my imagination. My observations were validated as over time the glow deepened. I didn’t look orange or brown. It was just a hint deeper than my regular skin color. Again, I can’t say how my skin would look if I piled on the lotion daily, so I can’t speak to that. In addition, I didn’t exfoliate my skin daily.

After my few weeks of trials, here is what I like about the product:

  • It’s really moisturizing. The lotion sinks into my skin and does not sit on top.
  • It doesn’t take long to dry and has not stained my garments or hands.
  • The glow effect is believable.
  • There is a lot of product for the price. I paid around $14.00 for 16 ounces. While this is expensive, in comparison to other self-tanners, it’s really on the affordable end.
  • It comes in a convenient pump bottle!

Here is what I don’t like so much:

  • The smell. To be fair, it certainly doesn’t have the chemical smell of most tanning lotions. It’s a neutral smell out of the bottle…a little minty or herby. However, I noticed once the product dried and sat on my skin, I smelled an almost yeasty smell. I’m not sure how noticeable it might be, but I’m very self conscious when I wear it.
  • The fact that a lot of the ingredients, upon further inspection, may be irritating or even toxic. There are no parabens, but there are quite a few other chemicals that I can’t pronounce. That always makes me a little wary.
  • The product is hard to find. I found it by chance in my local grocery store, but I doubt it’s very easily available for other consumers. The next time I went back to my store, I couldn’t find it either. I did a little research and noticed that some people have been able to find it at Target. (My Target doesn’t carry it).

I would suggest that if you’re already a fan of the tanned look, or if you already use self-tanners, this might be your new best friend.  The lotion also comes in a version for medium shades of skin. I will finish the bottle and then probably just embrace my pale. Until next spring…

Pratima Skincare Awesomeness

You guys may know that I’m obsessed with yoga, and recently I’ve gotten into something that goes hand-in-hand with yoga, Ayurveda medicine. (Click on the link for more info, as Ayurveda is a vast subject and I am not equipped with enough knowledge about it to school you guys.)

One part of Ayurveda medicine that I’m studying hardcore is the idea of doshas. We all have a dosha that relates to our body and mind, and if we follow dietary and lifestyle guidelines according to our doshas, and keep them balanced, we will thrive. If our doshas fall out of balance, that’s when we find ourselves gaining weight, breaking out, and all other kinds of icky mess—ain’t nobody got time fah that!

Pratima Skincare designs products that will work with individual doshas, they even have this nifty little quiz on their site so that you know what you dosha is and what products will work best for you.

Pratima skincare

I took the quiz and the peeps at Pratima hooked me up with some awesomeness for my dosha. They sent me a ton of products and all of them are absolutely amazing.

Here is a breakdown of everything I tried:

Vata Rejuvenating Body Oil So I definitely used the review as an excuse to have my boo thang massage me with this sh*t!! And it felt spectacular. You can use this to get a sweet booty massage or apply as a moisturizer fresh out of the shower, even while the skin is still a little damp as that allows it to penetrate deeper. It’ll leave yo’ skin feeling silky smooth. I especially love applying it after I shave my leggies. I get mad razor burn, but this is very calming and relieving to my sensitive skin..

Vata Essential Oil I used to be terrified of putting oil on my face because my skin is so terrible and I can break out at any moment, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE this essential oil. I put it on after I cleanse and before I apply makeup and it feels like a dream. It makes my skin feel thicker and fills in fine lines—almost like it doubles as a primer for my makeup. I haven’t experienced any breakouts with it so it’s safe for acne prone skin.

Rejuvenating Gold Eye Cream Looooooove this so much! I’ll be honest, I’m not one to apply eye cream, but I’ve been feeling like I should. Your girl isn’t gettin’ any younger! Since I’ve been applying this morning and night, I’ve seen a pretty significant difference in the appearance of my eyes. I feel like they’re brighter and more awake-looking. Definitely recommend.

Amla Collagen Cream Once again, I haven’t used many anti-aging products in the past. I must think I’m like immortal or something, but I’m hoping if I start at the tender age of 22 I’ll freeze my face the way it is…what do you think? ;) Well, that seems to be what’ll happen if I keep using this ish. Fah realz, my skin feels tighter and firmer from using this. I also have acne scars and I feel like it’s filled them in a bit and kind of smoothed them over. This is thick cream, so naturally, I was afraid it would break me out—NOPE! All is safe in that department. Let me also mention that all of these products smell divine–very clean, natural scents.

Neem Rose Face Sunscreen I’m so so so so happy a product like this exists! It is so hard to find a healthy sunscreen—especially one that doesn’t cause my delicate skin to break out. This stuff is heaven sent. It has neem in it, which prevents and minimizes blemishes. This Neem Rose Face Sunscreen has an SPF of 30 so you can prevent premature wrinkles while combating acne at the same time. I LOVE THIS!

Are any of you into Ayurveda medicine?

A woman of many hair colors, lover of all things yoga, believer of tea as a cure for anything, Buffy the Vampire Slayer enthusiast, health food freak, constantly searching for the fountain of youth or comparable makeup. :)

Sia Botanics: Desert Aloe and Jojoba for Dry Skin

sia botanics

I’m always eyeing new beauty products at Whole Foods—seriously, my beautdar is always in full force at health food stores. WFs is where Sia Botanics first caught my eye—their Desert Aloe and Jojoba dry skin line really spoke to me (it was saying sexy things like, “Slather me on yo’ face and look like a foin young homie again.” So… I had to try this new line out!

Desert Aloe and Jojoba Cream Cleanser, $16 – This is hella bomb for my dry-ass, winter-wrecked skin! I also love how it sort of pre de-gunks my parched, crusty situation and removes my makeup before it gets down and dirty. It barely has a scent (which is nice ’cause you know its no-frill, pure ingredients are doin’ their thang), it’s gentle, and super moisturizing yet light (does that make sense?). I’m def a cream cleanser gal—I’ve never met a creamy face wash I didn’t like, and this holds true to that.

Desert Aloe and Jojoba Moisture Mask, $19 - Desert botanicals and peptides deliver healin’ properties deep into your skin with this one. Leave this mask on your face for 20 minutes (polish your bowling balls, eat an entire cake, trim your nose hairs, whatevsies you gotta do to kill the time), and then rinse this bad boy off. Your skin will feel supa dupa soft and smooth afterwards—trust!

Desert Aloe and Jojoba Scrub, $18 - The texture of this scrub threw me off at first because it’s gelatinous, but after I chilled out and realized that it’s just very aloe vera-y, I was SO into this scrub. It’s gentle, it doesn’t have much of a scent, a little goes a long way, and it makes my skin feel so refreshed afterwards.

Desert Aloe and Jojoba Cream, $18 - I’ve been applying this after I wash and tone my face morning and night, and my skin is lovin’ this infusion of moisture-rich TLC. There’s one beauty tip I consistently give my VBR readers, and that is to find a facial moisturizer you love and use it all the time, day and night. Aside form staying out of the sun, not smoking, and eating a well-balanced vegan diet, it’s the key to having youthful skin forevah!

Bottom line: These products are all vegan and cruelty-free, super pure, non-frilly, and perfectly formulated for dry skin.

Schmidt’s for Happy Pits!

schmidts

Now I know we’ve reviewed a BUNCH of vegan deodorant on VBR lately, and they all pretty much rock (maybe some a teensy weensy bit more than others), but O.M.G… Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant stands alone when it comes to gorgeous, sexy scents and its smooth texture and application.

Let me get all listy on this ish. Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant has stolen my because…

  • It’s vegan, cruelty-free and doesn’t contain ick ingredients like aluminum, parabens and phthalates, synthetics or harmful chemicals.
  • Everything is handcrafted in small batches by the lovely Jaime Schmidt in Portland, Oregon.
  • Cedarwood + Juniper ← To-die-for scent! I suppose it’s targeted more for dudes, but I LOVE wearing this one. It smells so earthy and sexy.
  • Ylang-Ylang + Calendula ← Another to-die-for scent! Sers, these two scents are like my fave smelly combos of all-time! I need them as perfumes, too… so good!!! This one is also super gorgeous and sexy-smelling. Ugh, it’s impossible to do these kick-ass deodorants justice in blog form… you HAVE to smell them in person for yourself! Either buy some STAT or hunt me down on the streets of Oaktown and sniff my pits, yo!
  • They’re mega affordable—only $8 for a 2 oz. jar, and it’s gonna last you for quite a while ’cause you only need to use a pea-sized amount!
  • They’re creamy and smooth (versus chalky and crumbly like a bunch of natural deodoros I’ve tried), and they are super easy to apply.
  • Each deodorant comes with a little applicator—hallelujah!
  • This stuff totally works (like for realsenstein)! I’m in love!

What’s your favorite vegan deodorant?
