Ooo child, it’s been many moons since I dished about my ever-changin’ beauty regimen, so here goes… Enjoy!

Face:

Earth Science Chamomile & Green Tea makeup remover – This is an oil-free formula that is gentle and gets every itty bitty teensy weensie bit of makeup off, including all the bits around my eyes—I’ve been using it for years!

L’uvalla Foaming Facial Cleanser – This organic, super pure facial cleanser which contains billberry, lotus flower and antioxidants like Vitamin C, is gentle, removes makeup and helps fight acne, too.

Infotone Face Mist – This is like the everlasting gobstopper of toners. This is a reusable facial mist that you can refill with purified water for up to a year. It has a special clay ball inside that transforms the water into an anti-aging, refreshing spritz.

Moisturizer: Dermadoctor’s Photodynamic Therapy Laser Lotion – It’s a cruelty-free laser lotion (you heard correctly) set out to fight wrinkles (with SPF for daytime), and I use Pai Macadamia & Rose Cream (rich dry-skin formula for nighttime)

Makeup:

Arbonne makeup primer – I received a sample of this from my FB friend, Maureen, and I fell in love with it (on par with UD’s Primer Potion, but actually vegan)… will have to order more soon!

Everyday Minerals Fair Neutral Matte Powder Foundation – This foundation is light but still provides excellent coverage. I’m obsessed with everything Everyday Minerals—I wish they had a physical store right outside my house… no wait, I’d be broke as a joke—but I’d be lookin’ foin!

LUSH Color Supplements (liquid foundation) – When I’m in the mood to switch it up from powder to liquid foundation, I use LUSH’s “light yellow” base and mix it with a bit of moisturizer. It looks good and provides even coverage but the downside is that it contains parabens. Wompers.

Urban Decay’s Midnight Cowboy Rides Again eyeshadow – This glittery goldie shade is a staple in my makeup box. It perfectly complements my olive-y skin tone, and it sparkles all day long. It’s works for day and night va-va-voominess!

Manic Panic’s Eye Wear Glossy Mascara – This has become my new favorite vegan mascara. It’s thick, it stays put, and it’s bee-free (which is rare for mascaras).

Zosimos Botanicals Apricot Nectar lip balm – I have 5-7 lip balms scattered throughout my house at any given time. This is the one that currently lives on my night stand for last lubes before beddies. It smells like fruity candy and the formula is perfect.

Hair:

Pravana Naturceuticals Karatin Fusion Shampoo & Conditioner – This vegan salon line is exquisite. It’s designed for heat styling, so if your hair’s in need of some TLC, I highly recommend you seek this out. It contains sunscreen and a mega-dose of keratin amino acids and botanical extracts to keep your hair looking silky-smooth and healthy.

Thermafuse Leave-in Conditioner – This works as a detangler and de-frizzifier—hallelujah! I swear up and down by leave-in conditioners, and this one (which is packed with amino acids) makes my hair stronger and adds the perfect amount of shine.

I took a quickie trip to Vegas a couple weeks ago, and because I do everything in my power to not have to ever check a bag when I fly (it’s a hassle and it’s beaucoup buckarinos), you bettah believe all my toiletries were under 3 oz. In fact, I brought my Jane Carter Solution “Come Fly with Me Kit” ($25) that I got in the mail a few weeks earlier, and it’s brill—perfect for all my mini vaycay trips (and gym outings).

This travel kit contains all the hair care essentials: Moisture Nourishing Shampoo, Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner, Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner, Condition & Sculpt, Wrap & Roll, and Nourish & Shine—all in TSA-approved 2 ounce bottles in a handy travel bag.

Now that you know I ♥ the size and portability of these hair care goodies, let’s talk quality. Not only are these products 100% vegan and natural, but they are designed by and for women with multicultural hair (all textures, all types).

From Jane Carter’s website:

Above all, we believe that “hair is hair,” and that segmenting hair care by ethnicity does not encourage diversity, love and multicultural coexistence.

For me, when it comes to shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, etc.—the thicker and heartier, the better. I want my hair to be quenched with the most nourishing, moisture-rich ingredients as possible. Jane Carter gets this, and me and my crusty-ass, fried hair are eternally grateful!

My fave items in the travel kit include:

Nutrient Replenishing Conditioner – deep conditioning, dense formula which leaves hair manageable and smooth

Hair Nourishing Cream – I like to use this after blow drying my hair to soften and de-frizz and scragglies

Revitalizing Leave-In Conditioner – This is a great detangler and it doubles up as a sunscreen for your hair, which is especially important if you dye your hair.

Travel kits are also nice ’cause you get to sample everything before making any serious purchases. If you’re looking to try some intensely nurturing, healing hair care, I highly recommend Jane Carter Solution—all good shit.

Let’s talk hair color! Whether you’re looking to cover up some grays or funk it up a bit, cruelty-free hair dyes are definitely on the market. Although I wish this list were longer, I’m grateful that we at least have a handful of options (if you can think of more, please share in the comments).

Herbatint (~$14): If you’re interested in switching to a hair color that’s less harsh (fewer chemicals, no ammonia, paraben-free), balanced with plant extracts and herbs, you should give Herbatint a whirl. They have all the basic shades in permanent and semi and a couple earthy, edgier shades too. I’ve been ogling this particular one… so pretty!

Manic Panic ($12): Whether you’re looking to explore your funky wild side with some hot pink luscious locks (I so rocked this in high school and college) or looking for a simpler (and more conventional) brown or black, Manic Panic’s got you covered. Their line of semi-permanent hair color doesn’t contain ammonia or peroxide, and it actually leaves your hair feeling healthier.

Special Effects Hair Dyes ($14.65): I ♥ Special Effects hair dye! This stuff has wicked staying power, and they carry all the same types of cray-cray colors that Manic Panic does. One day, hopefully sooner than later, I plan on Cupcake Pink-ing it up—it’s deliciously gorge!

LUSH ($22.95): Looking for totally natural, plant-based henna color? LUSH carries henna bars in red, brown, and black tones.

Revlon ($3-8): If you’re in an absolute pinch and need a super quick, cheap drugstore brand that’s not tested on animals, there’s Revlon. Not my first pick, but it is a cruelty-free option.

If you prefer going to a salon, try these:

Paul Mitchell

Aveda

LA stylist Chaz Dean is one of my new heroes. Why? He’s come out with a vegan and cruelty-free line of hair (and skin) care products that cater to my crusty hair needs (sans the chemicals and sulfates). His unique line of salon-quality, multi functional beauty care is called WEN. Bookmark this website. Not only can you buy his amazing creations but you can watch instructional videos and learn valuable hair-saving tips (hear hear, all you flat iron & blow dryin’ peeps!)

WEN products that stole my heart… and my hair (for the best):

Fig Cleansing Conditioner ($28 for 16 oz pump bottle): Everything in the fig line is designed for people with extremely dry or damaged hair—that’s me, for shiz! Btw, they have different products for all hair types. This product is beyond amazing because not only does it leave your hair smooth and shiny, it also smells ridiculously yummy, and it’s a multi-tasking machine! Check it out… this product can be used as a cleanser (for doggies, too), conditioner, deep conditioner, detangler, leave-in conditioner and shaving cream. Day-um! I plan on trying this cleansing conditioner out in every way possible. At this point, I’ve only used it as a conditioner, and it’s divine. It’s a nice thick formula, and the longer you leave it on your hair, the better.

Fig Replenishing Treatment Mist ($32 for 6 oz bottle): This spray can be used on your hair and all over your body! I’ve been using this spray on my hair (sort of as a light leave-in conditioner)—after towel-drying and before blow drying. Again, I love the fig scent. I never really knew what figs smelled like before, but me likey.

Fig Styling Creme ($24 for 6 oz bottle): It’s a leave-in conditioner, polishing gloss and hair gel in one product! Notice a trend? WEN likes to keep things simple and allow their products to multitask. Ultimately, that saves you money, space and time. What I like most about this styling creme is that it tames my frizzy mane. I have a funky hair type that’s neither straight nor curly… I guess you could say it’s wavy, but my waves aren’t consistent or smooth. The product helps define my hair and gives it a li’l ‘tude.

Now that I’ve experience figtastic hair, I’ve decided to incorporate more fig into my life. I had my boo pick up some raw green figs at TJ’s the other day, and now I’m on the hunt for everything fig. If you have any fig tips, recipes or know of any other figgy beauty products out there, please lemme know! xo

CREO has a line of all-natural, vegan, paraben-free, plant-derived hair and skin care products that I just recently discovered, and I’m happy to say that they live up to my high expectations. At this point, vegan hair care, especially shampoos, need to seriously kick ass for me to post on VBR.

My fave CREO products include their shampoo, hair masque and shine spray. Check it out:

Nano Pro-tec Hair Cleanser with CREOPLEX: This awesome, sulfate-free, gentle hair cleanser is packed with anti-oxidants and sunscreen protection (that’ll help maintain your color if you dye your hair). It comes in a Vanilla Orange scent which is creamsicley delicious! (You know me, I’m all about the sweet smellin’ beauty products). I love the consistency and texture of this shampoo. I think most people have become so used to the feeling of conventional shampoos stripping their hair until it’s literally squeaky clean… Well, this shampoo is refreshingly gentle yet totally effective.

CREO Therapeutic Hair Masque: Boy oh boy, am I a HUGE fan of hair masques. I know some people are blessed with beautifully thick, healthy, shiny hair but I am not one of these peeps. My hair needs love and a lot of it, especially in the form of deep conditioning masques. This CREO masque seals down the outer layers of the hair shafts which make hair soft and shiny. This product is also packed with lots of anti-oxidants and UVA/UVB protection (again, great for retaining hair color). This concentrated, hearty conditioner will help ease the effects of constant blow dying and processing. I recommend rockin’ this hair mask at least once a week.

Nano Pro-tec Weightless Shine Spray: This nourishing Omega 3 and 6 fatty acid-rich formula tames frizzies and adds the perfect amount of shine to hair—makes it look sleek and healthy. And it truly is weightless. I have been using this spray religiously after styling my freshly washed hair, and I LOVE it!

I’m always eager to try new vegan shampoos and conditioners so if you have any suggestions, please pass them along! Thanks! xo

Get 25% off your entire CREO order by entering coupon code “VBR2011″ when checking out.

Sometime I feel like a broken record when I go on and on about how nasty and dry my hair is. My hair is in a constant state of crustitude and dude, it bums me out. It’s always a treat when I discover serious, no-bullshit, vegan brands of shampoo that actually make my hair feel deliciously soft and manageable (which is a tall order).

I was recently sent some samples of Neuma, a sulfate-free, sustainable, vegan line of haircare and I was excited to finally try some fancy, salon-quality shampoo and conditioner. I fell in love with their “moisture” hair care line (for dry and damaged hair – like mine)! It was concentrated, thick and nourishing and it smelled like lemon frosted cupcakes. My only complaint (which isn’t really legit) was that their samples were of sample size. Mama wanted more!

Neuma is offered in spas and fine salons around the country. (I know, I’m bummed we can’t buy these at Target, too). For a list of these locations, check their website for updates. Their website isn’t fully complete (although it’s very pretty and relaxing – with chirping birdies, even), so some of their menu selections are “coming soon.” I will keep you all posted if I hear any news.

Bottom line: Neuma is the shit! If you get the opportunity to try this hair care line (which is available in Moisture, Volume, Styling, Renew and Repair), you’ll be stoked – take my word on this.

Hair Fix dry Shampoo is perfect for those days you simply don’t have enough time or energy to wash your hair. It helps keep your hair looking and smelling fresh in between washes and really comes in handy for traveling and extending the life of your hairstyle and maintaining its color. It’s so easy to use. You simply shake the bottle, pour some of the powder into the palm of your hand and apply close to your scalp and work through the rest of your hair so it blends nicely and absorbs any excess oil.

Believe it or not, I only wash my hair every 3 days. (Maybe it’s because I’m 3.63% hippie, but don’t tell anyone). Actually, it’s because my hair is fine, delicate and dry and if I were to wash it more frequently than that, my hair would be a straw-like, tangley mess. So, in between washes, if my hair needs a fresh boost (i.e. funk diffuser), tada! *It’s also environmentally friendly to not wash your hair every single day!* I had to throw in an Earth Day sentiment. Happy (Almost) Earth Day!

Melisser, who runs the blog The Urban Housewife, (who is always sporting deliciously cute hairstyles) is the one who introduced me to Hair Fix. I’m so glad she did because I had never used a dry shampoo before, and now I’m hooked!

Hair Fix is available in 2 oz. bottles for $19.95 each and is available in brown, black and white.

Hair Fix is talc-free and contains Corn Starch, Organic Oat Flour, Tapioca Starch, Organic Peppermint Oil, Organic Rosemary Oil, Organic Lavender Oil and Organic Tea Tree Oil… these ingredients make this dry shampoo smell pretty and refreshing.

Special guest post by Helena Parker

I am new to veganism but my hair is not! I have been using Pureology hair products for about a year and a half and it thanks me every day. No really, it does. It shows me how thankful it is by requiring less color maintenance and growing longer faster.

Pureology products are 100% vegan, do not contain sulfates and are organic which means you don’t’have to worry about chemicals and pesticides in your hair. Pureology even offers an amazing money back guarantee. Not to worry though, you won’t need a refund because you will love their products. Prior to using Pureology, I had to get highlights about every four to six weeks. Since I’ve started using these products I only need highlights about once every eight weeks–sometimes I can go a little longer. The best part is the extra shine and growth. My hair used to find itself in a “rut” quite often and would protest until I switched brands. It would get dry and sometimes wiry, or it would simply stop growing. I was never able to stay loyal to one brand for longer than 6 months but I have been using Pureology for 18 months and my hair hasn’t slowed down one bit. They offer different systems for various types of hair and they have an online consultation to help you decide which is best for you. I’m currently using Hydrate and Pure Volume. I love how it moisturizes my hair and leaves it full of body without being heavy. I used Super Smooth for awhile and it actually straightened my hair so much that a blow dry was all I needed–no flat iron necessary. Another great feature is the concentration factor; the product will last twice as long as normal hair shampoos and conditioners. It might be slightly more expensive than other brands but it will last longer and your hair will thank you.

One more beautiful thing about Pureology is that the company values sustainability and strives to remain committed to caring for the environment. What isn’t to love about this company and its products? Nothing, that’s what! Now go try Pureology and please let me know if you love it!
