new year resolutions

The new year is just around the corner, and after lots of introspection, retrospection, alllll the ‘spections y’all, I’ve come up with my list of resolutions for 2017. I’m excited to share them with you guys, and I’d love to have you all join me in my journey! Let’s do this together!

20 New Year Resolutions for 2017

  1. Meditate – Om mani padme howwww is doing and thinking about absolutely nothing so dang hard!? I resolve to mediate and shut my monkey mind off at least once a week.
  2. Practice gratitude daily – I already do this but I want to keep this up. Every night before beddies, I think about 10 things I’m grateful for that day (i.e. kitty snuggles, extra jelly on my toast, bra-free Friday… ha, who am I kiddin’? That’s errday! You get the picture though.)
  3. Get organized – If you could see the office that I’m currently typing this post in, you’d think it was a natural disaster zone – like, where’s the yellow tape? I’ve picked up a couple of books on decluttering and organizing, and they are currently just cluttering my workspace, ha! My plan is to actually dig into them and put that ish into action. Hold my a$$ accountable! (please & thank you)
  4. Actually make recipes I’ve saved on Pinterest – I pin daily. No joke. You know what else I do daily? Nothing I’ve ever pinned. Ha, I get so inspired at things on Pinterest and then I let them collect interwebular dust, ’cause I never go back and actually reference stuff. I wanna make at least 5 things I’ve pinned come to life each month. That seems like a doable number, right?
  5. Eat mindfully – I used to be the world’s slow-assiest eater… until kiddos entered the picture. Now I scarf down food like I’m being held at gunpoint. I want to get back to the days of truly savoring my food, chewing with intention, and not chowing like a straight up beast!
  6. Quit sugar – This is a constant battle I’m fighting. Sugar is as addictive as cocaine, even says so on wikipedia. Sugar is SO bad for you… it feeds cancer cells, makes you cranky (after crashing from a sugar high), contributes to fine lines and wrinkles, gives ya jiggles in all the wrong places (i.e. not the boobal region). It’s just bad, yo. I’m still gonna eat fruit and healthy sweets, but no more evil cookies and cakes.
  7.  Try something new – Among new things and experiences I’d like to try are: eat Durian fruit (supposedly it smells like fart and tastes like heavenly custard); aerial yoga; dance naked under a full moon, and write a legit rap song with my hubby (ha, he doesn’t know about this yet). 😉
  8. Drink more water – This is self-explanatory. I’m the worst at drinking water, even after a sweaty work out or sauna sesh – what’s wrong with me!? (Nothing, I’m perfect.) Anyhoo, more water in 2017. Like, waaaay more water.
  9. Engage in new and fun exercises – I took a pole dancing teaser class this year, and it was SO much fun that there’s a big ol’ pole currently sittin’ in my amazon cart. Like I mentioned earlier, I wanna try aerial yoga, maybe hula hooping, fencing, and even a dance class. 🙂
  10. Get out in nature – I’m blessed to live in a town with a gazillion GORGEOUS hiking trails. I’ve been on 3. That’s like, beyond embarrassing. In fact, I can’t believe I just typed that. I wanna explortland the f out of PDX and get my sweaty-a$$ hike on. If you’re in the Portland area, come trail it up with me!
  11. Talk to strangers – I’m actually incredibly, ridiculously shy around strangers. I’m like a mute. I love to smile but the words just don’t seem to come out and I never know what to say. I’m going to make an effort to talk to strangers about the weather, give compliments, ask for directions, say hello, and smile more than ever.
  12. Give more compliments – ↑ Similar to #11 but not just applying this to strangers, I wanna tell all my foin friends (happens to be 100% of ’em) they be lookin’ good more often, flood my hubbers with all the kind words and feels that he deserves, and just acknowledge the coolness, beauty, uniqueness of the folks around me on a daily basis. I already think all these lovely thoughts anyway, but I wanna get better at letting them be known.
  13. Travel – Kids + traveling = not a real vacation. Ha, I’m sorry, but I’m just keeping it real. I don’t want that to be the reason for postponed trips until I’m 80, though. I’m gonna find a way to squeeze in some family vacays that we can all enjoy, and this will definitely included a long road trip in the summer. Destination recommendations are highly appreciated.
  14. Smile more – Studies have shown that pasting a smile on your face, even if it’s fake af, can improve your mood and reduce stress. Yes, let’s do more of this!
  15. Listen more – We’re all so eager to blah-blah-blah while other people are talking that we forget to actually listen to what people are saying. This is why we often forget people’s names soon after they introduce themselves. I’m self-aware enough to know (at least I think I am) that I need to work on this sh*t. I want people to know me as a really good listener. It’s such an admirable quality, and I wanna get better at it.
  16. Stare at the stars more – I know this has mega cheese written all over it, but when I actually take the time to embrace the vastness of the universe, my mind is frickin’ blown. It’s like a crazy sci-fi movie – we’re on a planet that spins 1,040 mph IN OUTER SPACE, galaxies and black holes and asteroids (and probably aliens) are legit, and it’s REAL LIFE. It’s grounding, humbling, and mind-blowing! I’d like to tap into this more often for perspective and appreciation. Also, stars and the night sky are just really pretty to look at.
  17. Have at least one date night a week with hubs – In my 4.5 years of parenthood, I’ve gone on fewer than 10 dates with my mister. I don’t live near family and I trust no one, very much like Fox Mulder, so getting peeps to watch my littles is not really a thing. Both kiddos will be starting pre-school in January though, so dates are in order! I’m ready to make up for lost time.
  18. Do at least one bold new thing a month – I’d like to step out of my comfort zone in 2017. I’m still figuring what this means exactly (need to sit down and make lists of “bold” things I’d like to do – perhaps another post?), but I’m ready to try new adventurous things and really live, despite the fears and insecurities that come with the unknown.
  19. Get better at photography – I want to up my photog skills both for personal and professional reasons. I want my VBR pics to be extra stunning and delicious, and I wanna capture my family in the most beautiful golden light with all the right angles and ambiance, etc. My plan = watch ALL the youtube tutorials!
  20. Good deeds – I not only want to dedicate my time and energy into helping the less fortunate, but I also want to teach my children by example that we all have everyone’s back. I’d like to volunteer more at animal sanctuaries, feed the homeless, create care packages for those in need, and generally lend a helping hand whenever possible.

I’m realizing that I could have easily made this a list of 50 (feeling inspired!), but this seems like a good place to start. What are some of your new year resolutions? xo
