Oil Cleansing: My Face is Taking A Soap Hiatus (And Why Yours Should, Too!)

oil cleansing

I’m a HUGE fan of slathering oils (especially argan, marula, and jojoba) on mah face at night for some nighttime moisture infusion while I’m Zzzing, but I never ever ever thought in a million years I’d be using oil to clean mah face, too! Y’all, it’s official, I’ve given in to the oil cleansing trend (which is actually hella old school, originating waaaaay back to ancient times and cultures all over the world).

WTF is oil cleansing? It’s the process of using oil instead of soap to clean you face. I know it sounds counterintuitive and slimy but hang tight.

Let’s take a quick sec to talk about soap for a sec and why it’s maybe not so great for you. Soap can throw off your face’s natural oil balance. Not only are conventional facial cleansers chock full of nasty chemicals and fillers, they’re often über drying, leaving your skin feeling tight and too squeaky clean.

Not only have I recently tried cleansing my mug with oil, but I have fallen head over heels in love with the concept. Oil cleansing is especially cool because it’s a multitasking time saver – you remove your makeup, cleanse (like fo’ realz!), and moisturize you skin all at the same time! My skin has never felt this soft before in my life (evvvvah) – in fact, I’m kicking myself for not oil cleansing decades ago. Gah, better late than never!

Oil cleansers are super simple to use, too.

For Normal or Dry Skin

Try sweet almond, grapeseed, or jojoba oil. You can even get away with using olive or coconut oil in a pinch.

For Oily Skin

Try castor or jojoba oil with a teensy bit of tea tree or peppermint oil.

For Mature Skin

Try rosehip seed, avocado, argan, or marula oil.

For Sensitive Skin

Try jojoba or apricot kernel oil with a little bit of lavender essential oil.

Simply massage a small amount of oil into your skin for a couple minutes and rinse off with a warm microfiber wash cloth – that’s it!! You can even dab on a little extra oil afterward for a moisturizer.

Have you tried the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM)? Love it? Hate it? What has been your experience?
