Lime Crime: Too Much Drama Fo’ Yo’ Mama!

August 14, 2015By 3 Comments

If you’ve ever wondered why I’ve never reviewed indie cosmetics brand Lime Crime on VBR, it’s because their name and reputation reeks of DRAMA, big-time. The brand has managed to lose their credibility over the years, especially within the vegan community.

Doe Deere, Lime Crime founder, definitely has a ruthless entrepreneurial fire (I’ll give her that, sort of), but she certainly seems to be lacking in business management finesse. She’s gotten mad flak in the past for priding her label as vegan while actively selling products that contained beeswax and carmine. And if you’re thinking about writing a nasty LC review, prepare for the wrath of DD. Homegirl doesn’t take criticism well. You can read all about Doe Deere’s crazy antics here. ← Whoever updates this Tumblr page certainly is a dedicated individual, right?

With a shaky past, peppered with misinformation and lack of professionalism, this bit of recent news makes ya wonder WTF is up with this company? Like, f’reals!

Lime Crime FDA warning

The FDA recently sent Lime Crime a letter citing that their Velvetines Liquid Matte lipsticks contain color additives ferric ferrocyanide and ultramarines, both of which are not FDA-approved for use on the lips. You can read the FDA’s letter in its entirety here.

The company claims that it was simply a labeling error. Their response, which was posted on their website, is below.

(LIME CRIME’S RESPONSE TO FDA WARNING LETTER)

Lime Crime received a warning letter from FDA in reference to the cosmetic pigments Ultramarines and Ferric Ferrocyanide printed on the Velvetines box. The letter was a request for clarification as to whether those ingredients are in the product, and the FDA does not claim to have tested the products for the presence of these ingredients in the formula. In fact, those ingredients are not in Lime Crime’s Velvetines products.

Lime Crime has been in active communication with the FDA regarding the letter. As per FDA, Lime Crime is complying with the request to provide documentation that these ingredients are not part of the Velvetines formula. We are confident that once FDA reviews the proof, they will understand that it’s simply a labeling error and consider the case resolved.

Ultramarines and Ferric Ferrocyanide are commonly used ingredients which appear in a variety of cosmetic and personal care products, including eyeshadow, face & skin products, and soaps. They are approved for lipstick use in Europe, but not in the U.S.

Whatchall think about this and Lime Crime in general? Love, hate, forgive and forget?

Btw, if you’re freaked out and wanna swap out your Velvetines STAT for some other colorful, non-traditional lippies, I def recommend checking out Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, Jeffree Star, and ColourPop Cosmetics, just to name a few. xx

Lime Crime has a damaged reputation which will continue with their brand. Their business practices are very questionable. I have read some customers complaints on Instagram about their defective Lime Crime products. One of the latest complaints was finding strange fingerprints placed on the lipsticks themselves! How many of these contaminated lipsticks did they send out, and how many customers are still using these germs-infested on their lips? That makes me think they’re manufacturing their lipsticks in an unsafe and unsanitary environment. I’ve never heard of a cosmetic company that lets workers touch lipsticks with bare hands. Also, the latest release of blue lipstick has been reported of having a bad consistency, and does not look like the photos they show. The owner deletes and blocks her own customers on social media if they comment anything slightly less than favorable of her or her brand. Even valid customer concerns are not taken into consideration. Whenever there is a scandal or a problem, it never seems to be their fault. Remember, for 4 months their website remained unsecured simply because they decided to delete comments made by customers who noticed the SSL was missing in the checkout page, and dismissed it as “hater” comments. They stay ignorant and dismissive when a problem arises, leading to angry and frustrated customers. How do I know all this? I used to love Lime crime products, and bought a lot of lipsticks from them. I had multiple bad experiences with them, plus they do not deliver high quality products for the high end price they charge. They clearly don’t genuinely care about their customers. Now they are dealing with the FDA who warned them about their unsafe ingredients. They claim that their liquid lipsticks do not contain such ingredients. Just like a few years ago when they claimed to be vegan when their lipsticks contained beeswax. I do not trust this company.

I totes agree with everything you said here sweets. No company should be getting into trouble as much as they do. They always seem so damn shifty to me, I always like to make my own mind up, not just ride on other peoples issues and opinions, but to be honest, the stuff just keeps coming about lime crime. I also really despise the way Miss Deere acts. She appears (at least to me) to antagonise people online all the time. Do unto others . . . Etc.!! Anyways, like you said, too much drama for me to even care about trying, esp when there are so many truly vegan/organic/ethical brands (oh and did I mention MORAL) out there!!!

I don’t like them. On top of all that Doe has already done, she blocked me from their Instagram simply for asking if their products are vegan or not???
