mastering the art of vegan cooking

“We can be the change in the world that Gandhi talked about—and we can start today by making vegan waffles.” — Annie & Dan Shannon from Mastering the Art of Vegan Cooking.

I frickin’ LOVE this cookbook for so many reasons! The recipes are all veganized dishes from Julia Child, The Great Depression, and WWII, and they’re mega budget-friendly (~$2 per serving). Many of the recipes incorporate leftover ingredients from other recipes (GENIUS), making them even easier on the wallet. When I think affordable homemade meals, my mind conjures up visions of PB&J sankies, rice and a can of beans, a bowl of cereal (ha, can you tell I lack culinary skills?), so this is precisely why I NEED this book. We’re talkin’ mad yummies like Mac and Cheez Pie, Vegan Bacon and Broccoli Quiche, Vegan Gyros, Cinnamon Roll Pancakes, Lemon Tahini Fattoush… and that’s just a teensy bit of the offerings from this badass cookbook.

Mastering the Art of Vegan Cooking also has a ton of practical cooking tips on things like how to maximize shelf life of staples, buy seasonal produce, and develop a shopping strategy using coupons and club cards.

Recipes aside, this book is heartfelt and sincere (shed many tears, both sad and happy ones ← no other cookbook has ever made me cry).  In this book, Annie and Dan candidly talk about the emotionally and financially trying year which birthed this thrift-inspired masterpiece. It’s seriously so much more than just a fun, vegan cookbook!

Net-net: Money-saving scrumptious recipes, beautiful drool-worthy pics, kind and compassionate culinary geniuses, and a personal touch that welcomes you into Annie and Dan’s world… so beautifully done!

p.s. The next time some cray fool gets all up in your grill with the whole, “But I could never go vegan – it’s too expensive” – send them the link to this bad boy… and make them invite you over for din-din once their copy arrives in the mail. 😉
