Even though my name is Sunny, I’m totally like a vampire when it comes to sunshiny rays. I love me some vitamin D (sourced from the sun), but I know that too much sun exposure can cause liver/sun spots, dilated blood vessels, wrinkles, and skin cancer. Noooooooooo no no thank you. Sunscreen with SPF is essential, people, but it’s gotta be natural!

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently reviewed over 2000 sunscreens and over 257 brands and found more than 75% of the sunscreens contained toxic chemicals that can actually increase your risk of cancer. INCREASE! Doesn’t that that defeat the purpose of sunscreen?!

Toxic Chemicals Found in Conventional Sunscreen

  • Para amino benzoic acid
  • Octyl salicyclate
  • Oxybenzone
  • Cinoxate
  • Dioxybenzone
  • Phenylbenzimidazole
  • Homosalate
  • Menthyl anthranilate
  • Octocrylene
  • Methoxycinnamate
  • Parabens

Did you know that there are tons of nut, fruit, and veggie oils that have naturally occurring SPF? Check it!

Natural Oils with SPF

  • Red raspberry seed oil – SPF between 30-50 (protects agains UVA, UVB, and UVC rays!)
  • Carrot seed oil – SPF 35-40

  • Hazelnut oil – SPF 15

Using a microwave or double boiler, melt your candelilla wax and shea butter. Once fully melted, add your coconut oil and avocado oil (while still heated in double broiler).

Remove from heat and place in fridge for 30 mins. Add in your red raspberry seed oil, carrot seed oil, and essential oil(s), and whip with a hand mixer until fluffy. Store your sunscreen in the fridge to extend its shelf life (6 months to a year).
