5 Awesome Baking Soda-Free Natural Deodorants

Warning: TMI alert.

I’ve been a die-hard fan of all-natural deodorant for years. Heck, I’ve even been making my own for the most part. Everything was all la-dee-da and grovy, until about six months ago when my arm pits freaked the F out on me. I was preggo at the time and thought maybe my hormones were to blame… my pits got majorly rashy, like, bright red and irritated. I googled my symptoms and came to the conclusion that I had fungus growing under there – fungus! Needless to say, I was pretty grodied out. I was shallacking anti-fungal cream on my pits like it was nobody’s business. After days of using that nasty ish, I was baffled as to why I was still rashtacular. I continued to google around and came up with the idea that maybe it was the deodorant I was using. I had been using an all-natural, baking soda based deodorant by a brand I absolutely adore. I decided to go without deodorant for an entire week as an experiment (I’m SO sorry Mr. VBR. Thank you for unconditionally loving your stanky beast of a wife!). Rash disappeared within a couple days. Thank DOG it wasn’t fungus! 😀

Boo, I guess I’ve developed a sensitivity to baking soda… only to years to come to that conclusion. Turns out the baking soda was throwing off my skin’s pH. Has anyone else experienced this?

Anywho, here are some rockstar, all-natural, vegan deodorants that are perfect for sensitive pits like mine!

I switched to Pit Putty by Bubble Bee Organic when I started developing bad baking soda rashes from Schmidts. Very happy with the Lemon & Clove scent and rashes cleared up completely in only 3 days of use. I do reapply after work, but it’s so soothing and refreshing that I look forward to it :)

So glad I found this article. I’ve been using a natural deodorant containing baking soda for a few years until all of a sudden I developed that awful rash. I’m looking forward to trying your suggestions. I’m sad to say goodbye to my other deodorant brand though. I loved it.

AHHHHHHHHHHH Yes, I made the switch AND found out I am oversensitive to baking soda under my arms!!!! glad i found this out before spending tons of money on getting the same issue!

Thanks so much for sharing your favorites.

One you can add to the list is…………

Natural Deodorant – Organic & Vegan – For Women & Men – Roll On – Reliable All Day Protection – No Baking Soda…
    by Bali Secrets
    I found it on Amazon

I had been using the Naturally Fresh roll-on for quite some time, and really liked it. I bought a new bottle recently, and within days had a horrible rash under my arms. I called the company, and the representative told me that the ingredients had recently been changed. She said there have been many complaints with the new formula. Looking for a new brand now. I just tried Tom’s of Maine but it didn’t even last through a 30 minute home workout in the a/c under a ceiling fan.

Thank you so, so much for this lineup and the delightfully fun read! Excited to try Meow, Meow–just placed an order! I’m new to this mega sweet site and so appreciate this newfound, giggle-inducing gem already!

  6. Jennaya says:

The naturally fresh also gave me a rash…

  7. Chanelle says:

Thanks for this! I am looking into natural deodorants that are DIY and more like a commercial stick form. What is the consistency of the recipe you listed? And how much does it make (like how long would it last)? I am a super sweater and am looking for something easy. I tried Schmidts (with baking soda) but i was funky a short 2 hours later and i hadn’t even done anything yet…. :/ And I have Nourish Organic in Vanilla Almond, which isn’t bad… but as I sit here I feel like I smell like a sweaty cookie… Any info you can provide would be awesome!

  8. Lucy says:

I looked up meow meow tweet and they do use baking soda :( unless there is a specific one that doesn’t?

  9. Alison says:

The exact same thing happened to me recently! I thought I had a fungal infection, but turns out the baking soda in the all natural deodorant I was using did the same to my armpits as it did to yours. I switched to the Silk (smooth, residue-free solid) ClayDry from Zion Health and I love it!

  10. Stephanie says:

I’ve been making my own deodorant for a long time, it’s the only thing in have found that works for me.
I rub on coconut oil and then a dusting of equal parts baking soda and corn starch. But your article is really good to know, in case I ever develop sensitivity! I wonder if the corn starch helps with the ph balance?

  11. Christine says:

Yes! I tried one of your recommended deodorants that had baking soda in it and I broke out in a rash immediately. I have only found two vegan deodorants that work for me.
