vegan lipstick guide

Calling all compassionate beauty junkies, let it be known that we all have a TON of vegan and cruelty-free lippy options nowadays! In case you’re wondering which ingredients in lipsticks could be considered non-vegan, most conventional lip colors contain ick nasties like carmine (aka crushed insects… BLECH, also commonly listed as Crimson Lake, Cochineal, Natural Red 4, C.I. 75470 or E120), beeswax (commonly listed cera alba), and tallow (animal fat), to name a few. You won’t find any of that nasty ish (or companies that animal test) in this list of kick-ass vegan-friendly and cruelty-free lipstick brands!

You absolutely must check out Shanghai Suzy! It’s a lipstick-only vegan cosmetic company :) http://shanghaisuzy.com/

  2. Marine says:

Hello :) I recently read that Lime Crime changed their ingredients list. I don’t remember where i read that but apparently their webiste went under maintenance and then some animal-originated ingredients didn’t appear anymore. Weird

  3. Emmie says:

I’m confused, I thought NYX was cruelty free

  4. Raashmi says:

I don’t think elf is 100% vegan as I was looking at their lipstick ingredients last night. Please can you double check this?

    • Sunny says:

Which lipstick are you referring to? I just double checked the ingredients on their website and they seem to be okay. And you’re correct, e.l.f. is not a 100% vegan brand. I know that some of their makeup brushes are made with animal hair.

  5. Rowan says:

Hey! I’m really confused about Manic Panic, I keep seeing you say they are all vegan but when I emailed them they only said the cross gloss, foundations, and some eyeshadow and blush shades were vegan!

  6. Melanie says:

Thanks for this great list. The Arbonne lipsticks are fantastic I especially like Strawberry and Candy. Love Xxx

  7. Tabitha says:

Great list, thank you for posting it! Just out of curiosity, which of the Lime Crime, Red Apple, and Zuzu Luxe lipsticks aren’t vegan? I just checked their site and couldn’t seem to find any carmine or animal products in the brands of those lippies, but if they have an ingredient in them that I haven’t been checking for that would be super helpful to know about….

    • Kate says:

My guess: I believe all 3 of those brands’ lipsticks are all vegan! However, the entire brand is not vegan (so lip balms or mascara might have beeswax, etc.)

  8. Wow, so many options… love it! Thanks so much for compiling this list. I’ve recently become a fan of lipsticks and am glad to know I actually have choices.

  9. Christina says:

Which brand is your favorite for lipsticks? I have a BWC lipstick but I’m looking for more shades. Thanks!
