cruelty-free and vegan drugstore makeup

Calling all thrifty vegan beauty bunnies (myself included), there’s no need to break the bank when it comes to lookin’ HAWT! Sure, there are lots of swanky, high-end vegan cosmetics in places like health food stores and online boutiques that cost a pretty penny, but there are also SO many affordable cruelty-free gems that can be found at your local Walgreens, Walmart, and Target.

Cruelty-Free Drugstore Makeup with Vegan Options

  • e.l.f.All of their their makeup and skincare is vegan – WOOT!!! Since they somewhat recently made the switch to synthetic makeup brushes, there might be some old-school animal hair ones still floating around in stores – just a heads up.
  • Flower Beauty – I haven’t personally tried this line, but the company is 100% cruelty-free—not entirely vegan, though (please read individual product labels).
  • Hard Candy – This brand is cruelty-free, vegan-friendly and sold exclusively at Walmart.
  • *NYX Cosmetics (owned by L’Oreal) – Here’s their official statement: “Most of our products are but a few do have animal derived ingredients and/or could contain gluten. It is best for the customer to view the labels of each product in-person and determine if there is any ingredient that could be derived from animals and/or contains gluten.”
  • Orly – Yay, vegan drugstore polish that’s also formulated without DBP, formaldehyde and Toulene!
  • Pacifica – SO stoked this brand is available at Target! This company is completely vegan and cruelty-free, and they have lots of awesome, nicely-pigmented mineral makeup.
  • Physician’s Formula – Also 100% cruelty-free and mostly vegan but peep the individual labels, y’all. Their 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Felt Tip Eyeliner is bomb, yo. 🙂
  • Pixi – This line is cruelty-free with lots vegan options – just be sure to read ingredient labels.
  • Sonia Kashuk – This line is cruelty-free with vegan options. Available at Target.
  • Wet ‘n’ Wild – This line is cruelty-free with mostly vegan options, but some products contain carmine (labels ←read those suckers!). 😉 They also list there vegan options here.
  • Milani & Jordana (sister companies) – These bunny friendly beauty lines have TONS of vegan options. You can peep them all here and here.

Please let me know if I’ve missed any animal-friendly beauty brands. xoxo

*Since this post was published, NYX was acquired by L’Oreal. Although NYX maintains their cruelty-free status, their parent company does indeed animal test.

  2. Beth says:

Everything I’ve found says that Nuance nail polish is vegan and cruelty free, they’ve got some great colors too. I dig it 🙂

  3. Bhakti says:

Do you know anything about L.A. Colors? Especially their lipstick. Are they Vegan?

  4. Sydney says:

I recently went through every single one of NYX’s products and tried to figure out if they were vegan or not. Currently, I have a list that is less than 25% of their products and there are still a few things I need to look into. It is simply a lie when they say that “most of their products are vegan.”

  5. Sarah says:

DO NOT TRUST WET N WILD’S VEGAN PRODUCT LIST!
RED SENSATION (577A) IS NOT VEGAN, BUT THEY SAY IT IS! IT CONTAINS CARMINE!!!
THEY ALSO SAY THEIR PERFECT PAIR EYEWANDS ARE VEGAN, BUT THEY ALL CONTAIN BEESWAX!!!
READ THE INGREDIENTS FIRST AND WRITE TO THEM ABOUT THIS PLEASE!!!

  6. Erica says:

Milani is listed on the leaping bunny website

  7. Chloe says:

    NYX was bought by L’Oreal…

  8. Meredith says:

Not all E.L.F. makeup is vegan. You have to check out each specific item you are interest in to be sure.

  9. Trang says:

milani should not be on this list

  10. Jennifer says:

L.A. Colors is a cruelty free brand. Not sure if they are entirely vegan, but some of the products are.

  11. Mac says:

I heard that Urban Decay is cruelty free as well? You should put it up here too!

  12. Nicole says:

I wish NYX offered more lip products that didn’t contain beeswax D:
