Top 10 Benefits of Oil Pulling

January 14, 2014By 6 Comments

I just started oil pulling recently as a way to bring in the new year with an all-natural, simple detox. It’s so easy and beneficial to oil-pull, I felt it was my duty to help spread the word.

First thing’s first, WTF is oil pulling? Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic practice used to improve overall health that involves swishing around a tiny bit of pure coconut oil in your mouth right after you wake up for 15-20 minutes. You may be grodied out by the thought of that much oil in your mouth at once (not quite as enjoyable as eating a tub of French fries), but TRUST, the results are well worth it if you keep it up for at least a few weeks.

Top 10 Benefits of Oil Pulling

  1. Brighter and whiter teeth
  2. Healthier gums
  3. Better breath
  4. Clearer skin (can eliminate skin conditions such as eczema or acne)
  5. Increased energy
  6. Clearer sinuses and alleviated allergies
  7. Migraine relief
  8. Better sleep
  9. Regulated menstrual cycles
  10. Improved PMS symptoms

How to Oil Pull

  • Oil pulling should be done on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning.
  • Take 1 tablespoon of cold-pressed, raw coconut oil in your mouth, and gently swish it around for up to 20 minutes (don’t swallow any!).
  • After you spit the oil out, brush your teeth.

This is a mega simple, affordable, and effective way to detox your body naturally. I’ve only been oil pulling for a week, and I seem to have a bit more energy and my teeth already look brighter. 😀

Have you tried oil pulling? What’s been your experience so far?

Hi. I started oil-pulling a few months ago. Also wash teeth with coconut oil & bicarb/baking soda (to taste). Mouthwash = “mix together 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon, 1 teaspoons honey*, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1 cup hot water (to melt the honey) & juice from 2 lemons.” (blog.freepeople.com). Seive it. Oil pull 20 mins a.m & spit in bin. Rinse well. Later when you wash teeth make sure is back, front, round back edges, gently tongue & mouth roof. Rinse well. (night floss – vids on Youtube). 2 tsp mouthwash 2 mins swish. Rinse well. Went to Dentist, bad atmosphere (!), did nothing, didn’t need cleaning by Hygienist. NO Plaque, NO Tartar. NEVER GOING DENTIST AGAIN COS I DON’T HAVE TO!!!! Good luck all & in about 6 mths go Dentist (let me know how you get on?). Re: honey* leave out if Vegan. THIS IS IMPORTANT: do NOT spit the oil down the drain. I’m sure you’ve noticed that around room temperature, the oil is more solid than not. It can very easily clog the drains.

I have tried oil pulling twice and I did not experience the usual morning breath. I have read somewhere that it is important to rinse with warm water and brush the teeth immediately, which I did. But I stopped doing it because I found it inconvenient not to spit on the sink or toilet.

I heard you aren’t supposed to brush your teeth immediately after because your enamel will be softened. Have you heard this?

I’ve toyed with the idea before, more so in recent weeks. I figure that it seems simple enough, I shower first thing in the morning taking about 15 minutes, so I can oil pull while in the shower 🙂

Hey I haven’t tried oil-pulling yet but I am thinking about it. I just wanted to mention for people to make sure to spit out the oil in the trash because if it goes down the sink drain it will clog the pipes!
