Earth Balance Vegan Snack Attack

February 6, 2013By 2 Comments

What’s the worst/best thing that could ever be waiting for me at my door when I arrive home? A HUGE BOX FILLED WITH VEGAN SNACKS. Yeah, that happened to me today—talk about pleasantly surprised. I almost cried… it was a beautiful moment.

Okay, so yes, I’m a very healthy person. Possibly the healthiest person I know aside from the lady that turned me onto the clean-eating path (you can check her blog out here). But every now and then even I have to indulge. The snack gods decided today was the day, and dammit, it felt good.

The peeps at Earth Balance are known for their delish margarine and peanut butter, but they’ve recently come out with some vegan snackies that are likethebestfuckingthings ever. They sent me their Vegan Buttery Popcorn, Vegan Aged White Cheddar Popcorn, Vegan Aged White Cheddar Puffs, and my personal favorite, their P.B. Popps, which are kind of like Cracker Jacks only better!

I had a handful of each (okay like four handfuls of the P.B. Popps, no shame), and then I had to have my partner take them away from me before I devoured all of them in a single sitting. Aside from being processed, the ingredients are pretty clean. The list consisted of about 12 things and none of which made me cringe. As far as processed snacks go, they’re definitely the healthiest I’ve seen. They’re also gluten-free, which is very important to me, and I would not have eaten them at all if they weren’t!

So the P.B Popps came in numero uno for both me and the boy, and we also agreed that the Vegan Aged White Cheddar Puffs were a close second. These tasted like the cheese puffs I used to eat back in the dizzay, only better and better for you (and the animals)! My partner even said they tasted like real cheese, then he changed it to, “they taste better than real cheese, because they don’t leave you with that gross chalky taste.” WIN!

So even if you’re a health food freak like I am, it’s okay to indulge in healthier versions of your favorite snacks sometimes, and these are a good place to start! So delicious! I definitely approve! This is a big deal because I DON’T EAT SNACK FOODS!!

These snacks look good, but I felt that the talk of “clean” eating in your post was out of place and distracting. I am a little disturbed by the ever-growing tendency in the vegan blogosphere to reference clean and healthy eating. Can’t we simply enjoy all kinds of vegan food without having to pay lip service to feelings of guilt and the concept of “clean” food (which I happen to think is total BS, just my opinion)?

Emily, I realize the clean eating aspect of this post is a little displaced, however, as stated in my bio, I am a health foodie. On other blogs I have columns that are dedicated to eating healthy. I just felt it was necessary to clarify that I wouldn’t usually eat processed snacks, but these were so good even I indulged.

I am disturbed that you’re disturbed about the trendy tendency for vegans to be healthy! This is a good thing! As vegans, we should set examples that will encourage more people to think like us. A big part of being vegan is being healthy. I like to go by the 80:20 rule. 80 percent of the time I eat clean, and 20 percent of the time I indulge.

Since I’ve been eating clean I’ve never felt better. So while I want to market these wonderful snacks that are a HUGE step for the vegan world, I want people to also think about getting healthier. It’s my nature, I can’t help that.

I’m sorry you found this post disturbing, but I hope that you at least give these snacks a try, they’re worth it!!
