Most conventional eyeliners contain these not-so-sexy, toxic ingredients: 2-Propanol, Benzyl Alcohol, Butylated Hydroxyanisole, Carbon Black, Diethyl Phthalate, Aluminum, Bismuth, Butylated Hydroxytoluene, Propylene Glycol, Silica, Butyl Paraben, Fragrance, Isobutylparaben, Isopropyl Paraben, Methyl Paraben, Retinol Palmitate, Aluminum, Polyethylene Terephthalate, Ethyle Paraben… Ew-ah!
Is your head spinning? How is it even legal for companies to sell products for your EYES with such nasties, right?
Let’s take matters into our own hands and make eyeliner from scratch at home using super safe, simple ingredients.
Recipe #1
What You’ll Need:
- 1 activated charcoal capsule (found at health food stores; they’re natural anti-gas pills)
- A teensy bit of jojoba oil
Empty the charcoal capsule and add enough jojoba oil for desired consistency. Put mixture into an old eyeliner pot and enjoy.
Recipe #2
What You’ll Need:
- 1/2 ounce of jojoba oil
- 1/2 ounce of cocoa powder (or spirulina powder for a pretty green shade)
Combine the ingredients, and apply to eyelids with an angled brush.
Recipe #3
What You’ll Need:
- Unsalted almonds
- Jojoba oil
Burn the almonds (using a lighter or culinary torch), and combine the soot with jojoba oil (2 drops for ever charred almond).
Let me know which recipe is your fave. Also, if you have more DIY eyeliner tips, please share!

I have the same question, what do you usually burn the almonds in? Foil?
What do you usually burn the almonds in?
You can use a lighter or a creme brulee torch.
Any idea what kind of powder you could use to create a purple color?
I would try mixing beet powder with blueberry powder.
Hi, thank you for your reply it was helpful. However what i meant is how long can I keep it until it goes rancid? Thank you!
It’s good for at least 6 months.
Hi
How long will the eyeliner last and how should I store it?
It stays put all day (my experience so far). You can store it in an old eyeliner or eyeshadow pot.
So awesome! Could we theoretically use other oils? Say vitamin e or grapeseed oil?
I don’t see why not. Jojoba is just my fave.
