Coming Soon …

So I wanted to share some exciting news with my super amazing VBR readers! My hubby and I are over the moon, reeling and doing back flips while frolicking and indulging in tasty, sugary celebratory treats because we’re expecting a baby boy this summer! EeeeEeeeee!! I’m so so SO excited to be a vegan mommy!

Since I’m almost 6 months into this exciting life-changing journey, I decided to share some of my fave expectant mommy tips. Enjoy!

8 Bits of Advice for Vegan Moms-to-Be:

  1. Take a vegan pre-natal vitamin every day (especially for iron and folic acid). I β™₯ (!) the ones from Trader Joe’s (they’re complete and gentle on the tummy).
  2. Eat lots of whole foods including colorful fruits and veggies (more than likely, citrus will be your new BFF, especially during your first trimester when everything else seems SO nasty).
  3. Drink LOTS of waterβ€”at least 64 fl. oz. a day.
  4. Get lots of sleep! Take naps throughout the day and make sure to go to bed early! This should be easy ’cause you’ll notice that you’re always beyond butt-tired anyway (especially during your first tri).
  5. Use jojoba, shea butter, or coconut oil to soothe your growing belly (and prevent stretch marks). I’ve been religiously using Kelapo Coconut Oil, and it not only feels wonderful on my skin but it leaves me smelling like a yummy tropical pregster. πŸ˜‰
  6. Have fun shopping for maternity clothes (I’m LOVING my H&M maternity skinny jeans), mommy jewelry (found some amazing pieces on Etsy), and baby goodies (found a ton of organic cotton baby clothes, bedding, and toys on!
  7. Load up your iphone with preggy apps like BabyBump, Sprout, My Pregnancy, and What To Expect. Then have fun browsing the forums, uploading belly pics, and joining your birth month club (I can’t even begin to tell you how helpful these apps have been!).
  8. Revel in the fact that you’re providing the healthiest foundation for your baby by being vegan! Woot!

I’d love to hear your mommy-to-be tips, too! Please share! β™₯

Congratulations to you and your husband! I came across your new fav video today and had to leave you a little congrats! Its so exciting to see your great tips, I just found out I’m carrying my own little bundle of joy and being vegan knew your site was my go to for all things healthy. Can’t wait to hear more about your birth and try out these awesome products. Vegan mom’s rule!

  2. Congratulations!!! We are so excited for you! Plus we love your secret stretch mark cream :)!

  3. Congrats on your baby boy – I remember you commented on my blog once when I was pregnant that you were thinking about trying soon. So glad that everything is going well! Best of luck delivering your little one. Now that I’ve been through it, I would recommend spending a lot of time researching info about breast feeding, if you are going to bf – it is so much harder than I thought and I wish I had spent more time preparing for it!

    • Sunny says:

Thanks, Kim! Congrats on your baby!! I’m so happy for you! πŸ˜€ And thank you for the heads up on breastfeeding. Do you have any favorite BF books you could recommend?

      • Sorry – I just saw this! I bought “The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding”, which I thought was really good. Also, this article is great:

I’ve heard goof things about Ina May Gaskin’s breastfeeding book – not sure of the title.

I ended up having supply issues which the books didn’t touch on much. Some websites I found helpful for that are and A lot of women have low supply, but it’s not the norm, so most likely you won’t have any worries there – If you do, look me up!

Best of luck – cant wait to hear about the birth & see pics if you are sharing that!

  4. Congrats!! Very Exciting! πŸ™‚

    First, congratulations!

I’m due in a week and a half and have been experimenting w/ homemade hair and body products my whole pregnancy because I was scared of the chemicals in a lot of products. I’ve found a winner for body cleaning/exfoliating/moisturizing:

Unrefined coconut oil (the refined doen’t smell as good)
    Almond oil
    Sea Salt
    Baking Soda
    Essential Oil

I just kind of eyeball the proprotions, just a little essential oil and baking soda, lots of the other stuff. You have to warm the coconut oil up a bit at first to get it liquid then mix in the other stuff until it’s a nice creamy texture. Rub it all over yourself when you’re in the shower and rinse off.

On a side note, when I got pregnant all of the providers at my Dr. office were a little worried becasue I’m vegan. Now that I’m almost done, they can’t get over how healthy I am and how great my pregnancy has gone.

  11. Katrin says:

    Congratulations!!!!! :))

  12. Amanda says:

Congrats Sunny!! My vegan pregnancy tips: coconut water..lots of it. Much better hydration than straight water (which went through me faster AND meant even more trips to the bathroom..which gets really insane in the third trimester). Omega-3 is also very important for the little one..I tried a vegan prenatal with it but couldn’t stomach it so like you found a prenatal I could stomach and supplemented with an omega 3 supplement (vegan of course). Also, if you can, lots of kale and greens with iron will really help as you progress along and the volume of blood needed increases. I was a little anemic for the first time in my life second trimester (after having “wow, your iron levels are higher than a non-vegetarian” comments from the doctor and midwife in the first trimester)..I stopped eating a lot of kale because of yucky morning sickness early on and then didn’t get back on it..I started again and the iron levels shot back up! My little vegan baby girl was born in September super healthy and happy!

    • Sunny says:

Thank you so much, and congrats on your baby girl!! πŸ˜€ Your tips are AMAZING – thank you, thank you! I’m chugging coconut water as I type this. πŸ™‚

GIRL YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE THE CUTEST BABY EVER. This also explains why you haven’t been posting a whole lot, you were probably battling morning sickness! We have a whole section of the PPK forums dedicated to babies and kids, if you want to chat with some other moms. Yay!

    • Sunny says:

Aw, you’re so sweet! Thank you, Katie! And you SO called it (re: not posting much) – I had a pretty rough first trimester. Will check out the PPK forums right now! πŸ˜€
