Most Affordable Vegan Makeup Line: e.l.f.
A VBR reader recently suggested I write about e.l.f. (eyes lips face) cosmetics, and I was like, “Duh! (← to myself) How come I haven’t done this yet?” I ♥ e.l.f. Not only are they a cruelty-free company, they’re entire line of products is now 100% vegan (they’ve ditched animal fur brushes for synthetic ones, WOOT!). I love that this brand is available at Target, and that their products don’t cost a fortune ($1-30)… oh, and they work really well! Here’s a list of some of my faves:
- Foundation brush
- Eyelash & brow Wand
- Brow Comb + Brush
- Smudge Eye Brush
- Wet Gloss Lash & Brow Clear Mascara
- Feather Proof Moisturizing Long Wear Lip Liner
- Color Protection Nail Lacquer
- Brightening Eye Liner
- Face Elements
- Non-Stop Eye Color
- New Moisture Care Lip Color
- Therapeutic Conditioning Balm
- Plumping Lip Glaze
- Super Glossy Lip Shine SPF 15
- Natural Radiance Blusher
- Clarifying Pressed Powder
- Shimmering Facial Whip
- Nail Polish Remover Pads

Wait, aren’t some brushes made out of horse hair?
Yes, unfortunately not all of their makeup brushes are vegan. 🙁
Are ELF Lipsticks that are made in China LEAD FREE ? I just bought a lipstick in the Bahamas recently.
I’m pretty sure they are, but you might want to contact them directly to double check.
While the e.l.f. original and studio collections contain parabens, the e.l.f. “Mineral Makeup” collection does NOT contain any parabens or chemical dyes! This line is a pricier, but I really like their mineral powder and blush.
I looked at the ingredients in a few of the products and they contain parabens (in many forms) parabens are toxic and have been known to cause cancer. I would rather pay more for a paraben free product.
I understand. I’m the same way. 🙂
I bought the elf “zit zapper” and it had a sticker on it that stated it was made in China. Aren’t they REQUIRED to test on animals?
They are required to test if they sell in China, not manufacture.
Not all ELF brushes are vegan. Apparently the entire essential line ($1) is from animal sources. But the Studio and Mineral lines are all vegan 🙂
Love this make-up. I had never heard of it before until now. This blog is AWESOME!
I just did my first order with ELF (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBB1gB6adDs) and was impressed. I had no idea they are vegan cosmetics but am so happpy to find that out. thank you.
I also knew they were cruelty free but I didn’t know they were vegan! Yay! Now I don’t have to throw out all of their products that I have!
Yup, heart ELF big time. Although, not so much the basic dollar line, as I haven’t found too many things that make me swoon from that one. However, the pro line – well, I’m sold. And, I just ordered a handful of the Mineral lipsticks, glosses, brushes and blushes – Can’t wait to try that line as well!
I LOVE elf products! I knew they were cruelty free but had no idea they were vegan. Im very excited now! I am having an ELF giveaway on my blog. Check it out: hopelessshopaholic dot blogspot dot com
Cool, will look for this line!!
:O they’re 100% vegan now?!?! This makes me so excited. So you’re positive I can just go on the site and buy WHATEVA I want? :DD
Yep! Do it up, Girl!! 😉
But not their brushes! Some of their brushes aren’t cruelty free.
Yep, you’re correct – not all of their brushes are vegan. All of their makeup is, though. 🙂
I did not know that everything E.L.F. is now vegan! Makes me happy [: However, I have sensitive, acne-prone skin. Do these products every break you out?
Their studio line is amazing and so are their minerals!!! I love them and the discounts are pretty good too when they have them.
Sunny, will you be able to do a review (video) on the specific items that are your favorites? (ones you marked an * with)
I adore e.l.f! I’m so broke right now, it was the only reason I was able to switch my cosmetics to the vegan variety in one go. PLUS – I’ve never had more compliments since I started using their products! My most favorite has to be their Complexion Perfection, though. It’s a pressed powder style pallet with 4 quadrants: yellow, blue, pink, and green to balance you out. I also ordered their lightest liquid foundation (porcelain), but found it was a shade too dark on me, so I swirled my e.l.f. mineral complexion brush around in the Complexion Perfection, swiped it all over, and BAM, it’s the perfect color and any rogue zit is hidden! Super awesomeness =D
It’s sticky and hard to remove, but it’s black as all HE-double-hockey-stick.
This is an excellent brush. The bristles are stiff enough to stay where you want them to go; they don’t “splay.”
Also if you download the iGive “toolbar,” ELF gives 3.6% of your purchase price to ARME (Animal Rescue, Media & Education).
(let me give that another shot…)

I too ♥ e.l.f. And according to their website, they’ve ditched the beeswax! From their their faq section…
“We do NOT test on animals or endorse such practices. Our products do not contain animal derived ingredients. Beeswax has been replaced by synthetic beeswax and lanolin has been replaced by Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladinpale-2. We currently support HSUS and are partners with PETA in the Caring Consumer Project. Please see our philosophy page for further explanation on our company. ”
Yay 🙂
Hey Molly, thank you so much for posting this! Good to know *everything* is vegan now! 😀
Haha I was going to suggest you review them too!
I had no idea e.l.f. cosmetics are vegan! That’s great since I have a lot of their products. My favorite is the All Over Color Stick in Lilac Petal. I don’t think they make it any longer, but instead, they have Shimmering Facial Whip in Lilac Petal, which is good too. I use it as a highlighter.
Lilac Petal sounds really pretty! I’ve gotta try that shade. 🙂
