  1. Vegan Deodorant Breakdown #2 «Vegan Beauty Review | December 6, 2010
  1. i love this review and the products you reviewed that ACTUALLY are CF/V, but please please be careful about promoting products like those from the Body Shop and Tom’s of Maine which are owned by companies who test, or sold in places where testing is required. It’s terrible they false market themselves as cruelty free, but as such a trusted source (you rule) please make sure others know they are part of a company who DOES test! — that being said, my fave is lavanila, and if B&B isn’t a part of a company that tests, i will try it out!

100% Pure Lemongrass deodorant….100% vegan+gluten free+organic!!!! They need to work on different scents though. I’ve been trying it for a month and it’s calmed my stinkiness but will not keep up in the summer and over 8 hrs :/ still use it .

  3. Ivy says:

Lavilin is my recommendation. You can buy it on Amazon and/or directly through their website ( Paraben-free and aluminum-free, and it WORKS!

  4. Patricia Richardson says:

Jumgleman deodorant. All natural & affordable. Most importantly- it works!!

  5. Ashley says:

I currently use naturally fresh crystal deodorant. I tried a few of Lush deo’s but they all make my armpits super itchy, like to the point I was waking up in the middle of the night and scratching my pits so hard I was bleeding. Maybe I’m allergic? After looking at some of your posts I definitely want to try Lavanilla, pitty putty and soapwalla! I LOVE my crystal deodorant and it works awesomely even in super hot and humid temperatures but sometimes I want my armpits to have a scent!

  6. Ruthanne says:

With all due respect to vegans, you all need to realize that your attempts at ‘deodorants’ do not work. Those of us who work with vegans are just being polite when we don’t say anything but quite frankly, your food choices are your own business but when you don’t smell good, everyone around you suffers. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

    • Sunny says:

Lol, I think there are stinky people across the board… I doubt it has anything to do with being vegan. πŸ˜‰

      • Ruthanne says:

You are certainly right. I guess it just doesn’t feel right telling a Vegan that their choice not to use deodorant has created this problem. No one wants to be accused of being prejudice. It really is all about addressing the problem but sometimes natural remedies don’t work. Thanks.

  7. ellen bradley says:

I’ve been using a cream called DeodoMom and I couldn’t be happier about it. It’s everything I was looking for (no aluminum, no parabens, 100% vegan) and more (no fragrance, no alcohol). And it WORKS too! My husband uses their roll-on type and is very happy too. Good luck.

  8. Nichole says:

I love Lavanila deodorant but it was breaking my cruelty free piggy bank. A store clerk recommended a brand called Alvera that has worked great. It’s an aloe based roll on deodorant that is all natural and claims to be animal product free. This stuff holds up to the humid Florida climate I live in and it has yet to stain my clothes like so many other products have. It’s also been very easy on my sensitive and allergy prone skin.

  9. virtual.jess says:

I know this is an older post, but I’m just here to put my 2c. in- LUSH makes vegan deodorant, and it’s the best stuff I’ve tried, though it can be tough to apply… I will try the lavanila stuff to compare though!

  10. Lori Bain says:

I use lemon, sometimes thai rock salt, or the thai salt spray, but lemon has always worked best for me, my husband prefers the Thai salt rock. And if I need to reapply I can get a free slice of lemon just about anywhere!

Slice a lemon and rub it on, will sting if applied after shaving, but not for too long. It will not work like an antiperspirant, but works just like a deodorant, except when I eat a lot of Indian food, but hey nothing will work on those days, lol.

A vegan walks in to a bar and asks the bartender for a slice of lemon, lol…

  11. Shelly says:

First of all I’m so flippin’ excited that I just found your blog! I’ve never heard of Pit Putty or the Lavanila deodorants! I’m still using the chemicals because every other product gives me horrible rash (I can so relate to the posting “Deodorant Breakdown”) or I’m a stinky sweaty vegan! Being a feminine woman, I’m not a big fan of the stereotype. I hope one of these actually work out! Thanks for your post! πŸ™‚

    • Shelly says:

As a follow up I have been using Lavanila and Pit Putty and LOVE them both! I have been officially chemical free for a couple weeks and couldn’t be happier! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! πŸ™‚

hey sunny- you might want to try earth science’s herbal liken deodorant (green & yellow label). i absolutely ADORE it, to the point that i am hoarding five sticks right now because i have a crazy irrational fear that the company will suddenly stop making this product.

another deo i like is nature’s gate “spring fresh” stick. it leaves my underarms kinda sticky after i first put it on, but it smells so amazing. it doesn’t last as long as the earth science one, though. sometimes i’ll double-team and use the unscented crystal spray first, let it dry, then layer the nature’s gate on top. typing that out makes me sound like a weirdo (who layers deodorant?) but i like my underarms to smell good!

i’ve heard so much awesomeness about the lavanilla deodorants, but i’m a bit hesitant to spend $18 on a deodorant when i’m still a broke nursing student.

  13. Juliana says:

I use Jason, apricot scent, and I love it! Before that I tried Tom’s of Maine, which worked as well, and Nature’s gate, which didn’t work for me. Got me curious about lavanila!

  14. Jessica says:

Does anyone know how to make deodorant from scratch at home?

  15. Lowen says:

Thank you for the review! I will for sure fork out the cash for the Lavanila, it sounds like the answers to my prayers.
    I have tried:
Tom’s-this one worked for a while, but after a few weeks of use, my underarm skin started to peel off. This also happened to my guy friend after using it for a while–a different scent too, so it must just be the formula.
I’ve also tried Nature’s Gate-smells great going on, but doesn’t work as a deodorant for me.
The same goes for Alba-smells good, but doesn’t work.
Jason brand-same deal as the NG and Alba.
Dessert Essence Tea Tree deodorant works at keeping me smelling good, but makes my underarms breakout…ugh!
haha, also tried a brand called In Love With Body Care–that one burned going on and irritated my skin. It was also the type that you have to heat, or breathe on to get it soft enough to glide on. It does prevent odor though.
Weleda rose spray deodorant got really good reviews but gave me the worst rash ever. It smelled lovely, just so amazing. My nose loved it, my underarms hated it. It is also pretty pricey. Luckily, I showed the people at Whole Foods my rash and they refunded me immediately.
I was about to give up hope and then decided to try Arm and Hammer Natural. This one is free of aluminum and parabens, but has some unsavory ingredients…preservatives and such. Not like conventional deodorant, but sort of in between the totally conventional kind and natural kind. Anyhow, this one works great. It’s clear…and I def. prefer the solid white stuff too, so that sucks. But, you apply it once, wear it all day and still smell either good or at least neutral at the end of the day. It also doesn’t clog my pores or really irritate my skin. It tingles a bit going on….especially after shaving, but nothing uncomfortable. It has a totally masculine smell to me, but other people seem to like it when they smell it on me. Anyhow, I wear it because it’s the best I’ve tried so far.

I just want something that A.) works as a deodorant B.) doesn’t make my skin irritated–especially after shaving C.) Doesn’t clog my pores and of course it should be vegan and natural. haha, sounds like I’m asking for a lot!

But thank you times 1000 for your review! I always like to know what brands other people have tried and what works for them. I am so going to try the lavanila!

  16. Evie says:

Yay, I’m so glad you like it!

  17. Vegyogini says:

I use Tom’s of Maine (preferrably the unscented one) and have been for years. It works great for me! I’m not sure I can justify spending nearly 5x as much for the Lavanila, but I would love to try it! Unless it leaves white under the arms, in which case, I don’t think I’d like that very much. πŸ™‚

  18. Katherine says:

Thank you so much for doing a deodorant review! I have just this year learned the truth about what’s in all our body products, and have been able to replace everything successfully, except deodorant. So far I’ve tried JASON Naturally Fresh Deodorant Stick for Women – which has no parabens, mineral oil, aluminum, animal byproducts, fragrance & doesn’t test on animals – but also doesn’t work very well, and Kiss My Face Liquid Deodorant Rock – also no parabens, animal ingredients, articifial colors, fragrance & also not tested on animals – but again, don’t love it. I had steared clear of Tom’s, cause I know some of their deodorants have propylene glycol in them. I will definitely have to give some of the others you mentioned a try though. Like you, I sweat – I don’t glisten, or glow, or perspire – I SWEAT, so I need something strong, but don’t want to harm my body in the process. Thanks again!
