Crystal Deodorants: The Purest De-Stankifiers

September 20, 2010By 18 Comments

So, I’m somewhat of a stinky beast. 😉 Unfortunately I’m not one of those ladies who just “glisten,” especially on a scorching hot day or after a workout. I used to be a religious user of antiperspirants… that is, until I learned how evil they were. They literally prevent you from sweating (which is your body’s natural way of cooling itself off) by blocking your sweat glands with aluminum-based chemicals—not healthy whatsoever!

I recently dedicated an entire week to only using crystal deodorants (by the brand Naturally Fresh Crystal Deodorants) to see what the results would be (workouts included). I was a little skeptical, but I knew that since I hadn’t used antiperspirants or conventional deodorants for quite some time, my pits were pretty detoxed and perfect candidates. Well, guess what? Not only did I last the full week, but I’m officially a convert! This stuff works—you just have to have faith.

It’s so easy to use. You just moisten the crystal and rub it on areas you wish to deodorize. The salt molecules provide a barrier of protection against odor-causing bacteria. It’s not rocket science; it’s just awesomeness times 12. 😉

Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystals rock because…

  • They come in stick, roll-on and spray versions (the sprays are my faves)
  • You can opt for a fancy scent: Ocean Breeze, Lavender, Papaya Fusion and Honeydew Melon (I’m currently diggin’ the Lavender)
  • They come in travel sizes
  • They don’t leave any white residue on your clothes
  • The crystal sticks practically last forever (saving you lots o’ cha-ching; they’re only $3.99-5.99 each!)
  • They are perfect for people with sensitive skin
  • They are cruelty-free and vegan
  • They are not sticky, goopy or toxic-smelling
  • And they work!

You can find Naturally Fresh Crystal Deodorants at Save Mart, Vitamin Shoppe, Whole Foods Markets, Vitamin Cottage, Raley’s, Henry’s, Smith Drug, various health food retailers,,, and

I was wondering if you could do a video review on every natural deodorant you have used. I know its not the best topic in the world but it would really help me decide which one to buy. I need a new natural one.

  2. Evie says:

Have you ever tried Lavanila’s deodorants? I *think* they’re vegan, and holy crap does mine smell AMAZING (I have the grapefruit vanilla one). My fiance thinks I’m weird because I’m always sniffing my armpits after I put it on lol

    • Sunny says:

NO, I haven’t tried their deodorants but I always ogle them at Sephora… I need to just buy some already! I want to do another review on vegan deodorants but compare all the brands at once… I have a feeling I will fall in love with Lavanils’. 🙂

  3. Jessica says:

I just put my order in – can’t wait to try!

  4. Becky says:

What happens if I don’t give my armpits a break in between transitioning to a natural deodorant? Not sure I could handle the stank! You inspired me to try a natural deodorant, Miss Sunny!

  5. Megan says:

I recently discovered the awesomeness of crystal deodorants, too. (Crystal Essence brand lavender spray is the one I use.) I’ve tried dozens of all-natural, vegan, healthy deodorants and this is the FIRST one that both worked AND didn’t irritate my skin.

  6. Cat says:

Oh Sunny, you’ve done it again! I’ve been wondering about this product line for a while and you saved me the trouble of trying them all myself! 🙂 I used Kiss My Face Liquid Rock (in lovely Peaceful Patchouli) for a few years back in the day, and have been wanting to go back to a natural alternative. Thanks for sharing!

    • Sunny says:

Thanks, Cat! Yeah, I’ve gone back and forth between natural and non-natural deodorants(never giving my pits a chance to truly adapt), and now I’m 100% sure I’ll lever use conventional deodorants ever again. Does Kiss My Face still make that Peaceful Patchouli Liguid Rock? It sounds so pretty!

      • Cat says:

They do! They actually still make tons of Peaceful Patchouli scented products. If people don’t like the Liquid Rock, they might try their stick version w/ baking soda and clay. Still totally all natural, of course!

  7. I use a crystal deodorant too. Mine doesn’t have any packaging or anything; it’s just a salt “crysal” that I keep in a dish on my vanity, wet, and apply! 🙂

I recently switched to natural deodorants after reading you do need to give your body time to adjust. I am glad I did! To detox, first, scrub your underarms with a loofa and soap when showering to remove built up deodorant and remove dead skin that could block your pores. Next give yourself a week or two for your body to adjust getting rid of toxins and then it should work. I have used Kiss My Face Liquid rock for a month now and have had less odor and wetness. I also tried Nature’s Gate scented and it works also. The first week is the hardest since you don’t want to smell, but it is a relief not to worry about health dangers from conventional deodorants.

  9. Rebecca says:

Hmmm… I tried the crystal once, but it did not work. I was stinky! Do you need to detox in some way before switching? Have you tried Lavanilla deoderant, recommended in No More Dirty Looks?

  10. Jessica says:

I’ve been using crystal deodorants for years. They are cheap and effective. I’ll have to try the scented ones!

  11. Sarah says:

I agree. I was a Secret/Dove antiperspirant user for years, and I was very skeptical about the effectiveness of natural deos. Then, I tried Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystal. I prefer the scented Roll-Ons (Ocean Breeze is fun), and the scented Spray Mists for refreshers. I think my favorite part is not having white chalky stuff get all over my shirts/dresses anymore. 🙂
