Silk Heart Health Soy Milk Giveaway!

October 14, 2009By 64 Comments

Vegans and lactose intolerant peeps have been enjoying soy milk for many decades. Why is soy milk the bomb? It’s รผberly delicious, it’s not loaded with hormones, fat or cholesterol and it’s way healthier for you in general. By drinking soy milk instead of cow’s milk (which is intended for fattening up baby cows) you decrease your chances of getting heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis. Also, it’ll help you keep that lean, sexy figure of yours.

Silk Heart Health

Silk Heart Health

One of my favorite soy milk companies is Silk. They are wind powered, they use non-GMO soybeans, their soy milk contains complete proteins and you can get it plain, vanilla or chocolate flavored. Silk’s new Heart Health Soy Milk combines the heart-health benefits of soy protein and plant sterols which have both been proven to reduce the risk of cholesterol and heart disease… and it’s super yummy! I personally love using vanilla Silk Heart Health on my breakfast cereal!

I’m going to be giving away 4 half gallons of Heart Health Soymilk to one of my lucky readers. All you have to do is leave a comment. Feel free to tell me how much you like soy milk or which flavor is your favorite (but your comment doesn’t have to be be soy milk related at all). A winner will be announced Oct. 21. Good luck!

If you’re new to soy milk, keep in mind you can use it any way you’d normally use “traditional” milk (i.e. in cereal, baked goods, milkshakes, straight out of the carton, etc.)

You can even use soy milk in facials! Yup! I had to tie vegan beauty in here somehow. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I came up with my own beauty recipe.

Blend up 1/3 cup of oats (which are exfoliating and moisturizing) in a food processor, add one teaspoon of raw agave nectar (which is bacteria inhibiting) and add enough (~ a couple teaspoons) soy milk until it gets the consistency of a paste. Make it as thick or as watery as you like. Apply it on your face and leave it on for about 5-10 minutes and then rinse it off. Voilรก! You just saved yourself a ton of money with a homemade facial.

After you’re done with your facial, try making this smoothie. I borrowed the recipe from Silk’s website:

Raspberry Mint Chocolate Silk Smoothie

  • 2 cups Raspberries, frozen
  • 2 cups Silk Original
  • 2 Tablespoons Almonds
  • 4 Tablespoons Maple syrup
  • 2 Tablespoons Chocolate chips

Blend all ingredients in a food processor and serve. Garnish with 4 mint leaves. (serves 4)

    • Aleta says:

Growing up severely lactose intolerant, I never really enjoyed things like cereal or a glass of milk with a cookie. I always felt like I was missing out. But with soy milk, I get to enjoy all those things for the first time in my life. From what I remember of milk, soy milk tastes pretty much the same and even better for me ’cause I don’t get sick. I REALLY like the vanilla and chocolate. Its a sweet treat I enjoy in the afternoon!

  11. Lucy says:

  13. scott says:

i love silk. fuck the haters.

  14. Anna says:

I love just soymilk- it tastes so much healthier. Once you try soymilk, why ever go back to regular milk?

  15. Bridget says:

Soy milk tastes AMAAZING with special K cereal.

  16. Lori says:

I like the plain ‘ol Original flavor for my cereal but LOVE the chocolate for protein shakes.

  17. nick says:

Sometimes, you read something that says what you want to say better than you could say it yourself. I completely concur with Avistrange’s entire comment above, particularly this:

“Now letโ€™s all start thinking big picture instead of nitpicking our fellow Vegans. We should be spending our time and energy working to open meat eating peopleโ€™s eyes to the value of a Vegan lifestyle in ANY WAY WE CAN!”

    Could not agree more!

  18. Hilda says:

I love soymilk!!! My favorite is the vanilla flavor, YUM!!!

  19. Matt says:

    Soy milk rocks.

  20. layla says:

i am sooo making that facial! thanks ๐Ÿ˜€

  21. Silk yogurt is the best non-dairy yogurt I’ve tried!

  22. @BerksBess says:

I try to find Silk with added DHA, though it’s not always in the supermarket.

  23. Alex Beaver says:

Hm…my husband and I usually just by the Silk Light Vanilla. We use it in our coffee, in our cereal, and I ESPECIALLY use it for baking all of my super delicious treats!! I love how it tastes and I feel good drinking it and knowing that no animals were harmed in the making of the product ๐Ÿ˜‰

  24. laura says:

Very Vanilla Silk! It’s for kids but holy crap, it is magical! It’s like a melted milkshake. You can eat it with even the healthiest hi-fiber cereal and it tastes like magic!

  25. Ambrlee says:

I love chocolate soy milk!!! yum yum yum!

  26. cherrybomb999 says:

very vanilla is my fave. I freeze it sometimes. Or add alcohol, like rum, Midori, and/or vodka.

chocolate silk is good with Malibu rum.

I’m looking forward to Silk nog, it tastes a lot like eggnog. i like to put rum in it.

  27. CharlieB says:

I love the way Soy Milk taste- especially the chocolate version! Anyways, I have never been able to drink cow milk since I have the lactose intolerance thing- so for many years I just didn’t drink anything. It wasn’t until 2 years ago when I was in Austin, Tx that I discovered Silk Soy Milk and loved it. I like that it is healthy for you, it doesn’t have all that sugar cow milk has, and you get many variaties!

  28. Sam McCall says:

I love Silk Organic Vanilla – totally addicted to it! It’s great right out of the carton but what I really love to do is make a pot of strong chai tea, put it in the refrigerator so it gets really cold, then use it to make chai soy milk. I make is roughly 50/50 tea and soy milk but it’s SO good.

I always been very health conscious but recently went vegetarian/bordeline vegan and love that Silk soy milk takes care of the B12, calcium, and vitamin D issues

  29. James says:

    mmmmmm soy milk!

  30. I love all the grain milks: soy, rice, oat, almond, hemp, multi-; and I love that it’s available plain or vanilla flavored…and the nog (don’t get me started!) is a seasonal sensation I look forward to all year. I especailly love the vegan creamers available, including Silk’s (I’m so happy that So Delicious now also has a coconut milk creamer, yum), and that they’re available in plain, hazelnut and French vanilla.

I enjoy Silk milk in recipes, on cereal and all by itself, although some vegan cookies are a delightful complement, or maybe some Silk pie (vegan, of course), or perhaps a piece of vegan cake. It’s great in smoothies or even in a glass with a dollop of some vegan ice cream; I enjoy drizzling it over my oatmeal, too.

Silk milk is one more reason it’s so easy to be vegan!

  31. L.A. says:

i love soy milk! vanilla flavor yum!

  32. Kristi says:

I thought we’d hate it, but when we switched over to soymilk, we barely noticed. You’ll never get me on the soy cheese bandwagon, but Silk is pretty darn good.

    We drink original Plain.

  33. Sarah says:

I love soymilk because it’s is just sweet enough to make my coffee perfect and gives me a few extra grams of protein on my all veg diet! I usually drink plain but every once in a while I spring for Chocolate or Vanilla.

  34. Domiknow says:

Silk is by far the best soy milk I have found on the market! It’s smooth, not too thick, not too watery, and the flavors are excellent! I usually purchase Chocolate, and have found Very Vanilla to be excellent on cereal. The Nog flavor available through the holidays is excellent also!

  35. Marlene says:

Oh, I would love to try this! I think I probably will even if I don’t win. I only started drinking soy milk last year, but I’m so glad I did. My allergies aren’t nearly as bad (dairy + allergies = no no) and it tastes so nummy! ๐Ÿ˜› I’ve got my mom hooked too. Thanks for getting this out there!

  36. alex says:

Silk is owned by Dean Foods, the largest dairy producer in the US. With all the options we have, I think vegans can do better!

    • Sunny says:

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I believe any alternative to dairy is a good one no matter who manufactures it. By the way, good luck in the contest! ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Avistrange says:

To Alex and anyone else hating on this contest here or on Twitter:

If you’re planning to boycott Silk (the only non-dairy milk option in most of the U.S.), you should commit your logic to all aspects of your shopping habits:

      1. No more Follow Your Heart products like Vegenaise because they serve dairy in their restaurant and sell dairy and other animal products in their market.
      2. No more shopping at Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s because they sell meat and other animal products.
      3. No more buying clothes at ANY store that sells leather, wool, silk, etc.
      4. Better drop out of any university with a medical research department because they likely take part in the cruel and unscientific practice of vivisection.
      5. No more eating at Vegan friendly omni restaurants because they serve animal products.

You get the idea… If you’re not planning on committing to all of these and many more lifestyle changes, please consider focusing on spreading the Vegan message to non-Vegans rather than spending time criticizing fellow Vegans for not being “Vegan enough”.

Another point is the sheer reality of Capitalism and how promoting Silk is actually good for our cause of alleviating the suffering of dairy cows. I’ll explain: If this contest or any other promotion increases the sales of Silk products, Dean/White Wave Foods would be foolish not to respond to the increased demand with anything but increased supply. This means as Silk sales rise, so will the marketing budgets that get spent to promote “Natures Perfect Protein” (their marketing tag line) on television and other mass marketing platforms. The sad reality is that most people will never respond to the ethical argument, so the more large corporate dollars that are spent telling the masses that soy is healthier than dairy, the better!

Now let’s all start thinking big picture instead of nitpicking our fellow Vegans. We should be spending our time and energy working to open meat eating people’s eyes to the value of a Vegan lifestyle in ANY WAY WE CAN!

  37. Adam Sears says:

I agree, Sunny. Silk is the best. I usually get Vanilla. I’m going to make a Raspberry Mint Chocolate Silk Smoothie, and then rub it on my face to see what happens. ๐Ÿ™‚

  38. Rach! says:

I love Silk Vanilla for a sweet after dinner treat, or just to go with some cereal in the morning. ABSOLUTE HEAVEN. And I didn’t know they were powered by wind! How cool!

  39. Helen says:

Ooo… soymilk! I love soymilk! It doesn’t make my tummy upset, tastes awesome, and for some reason choco soymilk tastes 80 times better than real choco milk!

My husband and I recent switched to being vegetarian and we’re trying to get away from most animal products. I’m hoping to get him to like this stuff so we can use it more often in cooking!

  40. Avistrange says:

You are my favorite blogger in the universe! I’m actually going to try that facial… and I’m a dude!

  41. Hello Veggie says:

I luv SILK chocolate milk minis! They’re a great snack! =)

The recipe you posted looks so tasty, thanks! I’ll spread the word on this giveaway.

  42. birdfeed says:

My favorite is Vanilla soymilk, for sure! It’s amazing with cereal.

  43. Emily says:

Unflavored for me! Or at least, the unsweetened kind. I get enough sugar elsewhere. =)

  44. kim g. says:

My favorite is also Silk Nog. I never even liked regular egg nog, but their version is so yummy!

  45. quarrygirl says:

ME ME ME MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! i like chocolate!

  46. Jessie C. says:

Love Silk Soy Milk! It’s a staple in our house, kids love chocolate, DH and I love vanilla flavor!

  47. Mary L. says:

I love using soymilk in making creamy pasta sauce.

  48. heather clegg says:

Ok, so who else is stoked for soy nog with nutmeg?! Because I am.

  49. Melissa G says:

I love Soy Milk. My favorite is the holiday Silk Nog. It is best with some Jameson Whiskey (which is also vegan). Thanks for the rockin’ giveaway.

  50. Amanda Thomas says:

I absoultely love drinking chocolate soy milk, but lately I have been using plain soymilk to make a lot of breakfast foods like pancakes and waffles.

  51. Tracy says:

I’m in! I am a sucker for the Silk Soy Nog. Mmmmm

  52. Molly says:

    My fave: Silk Vanilla Light.

  53. Carrie says:

Chocolate soy milk sounds soooooooooo yummy!

  54. I really love soy milk. I’ve been drinking Silk Soy Milk since before I was even a vegan! I’ve replaced all my recipes that call for milk with soy milk. I also just love to drink it by itself. In my eyes, soy milk tastes better, and is healthier for you than an animal’s milk.
